Show I PRINCIPAL PROPERTIES IN THE ABSTRACT, jjpj By Eugene Grutt. W During the height of the Regent excitement, about a year ago, a man by the name of Carson, p who had arrived in Regent too late to make any ' l locations in the Immediate vicinity of the camp of Regent, went down the road two or three miles r to take a look at the country, and he was so fall fa-ll vorably impressed by the surface showings on a hill near the roadside that he located a number fl of claims now known as the Balloon group. The M hill on which Carson made his locations has since M become famous under the name of Balloon Hill, W the heart and center of the Rawhide district, r Soon after Carson made his locations the McLeod" I boys and C. B. Holman came over from Yering-f Yering-f ton, located a number of claims on two hills lying ' to the northwest and west of Balloon Hill, and j these two hills are now known as Grutt Hill and HL McLeod Hill. Holman, who was a cowboy from Hfc. Wyoming, had just visited Buckskin, and being H partial to the cowboy life, he suggested that the HI new camp be named Rawhide, and his companions HI agreeing with him, that name was chosen. HBf I came into the new camp last August, and Hff immediately purchased an interest in eight claims HgL lying on the southern slope of Grutt Hill and Hflf lapping over on the northern slope of Balloon Hff Hill. Later on I bought the interest of J. B. Davis H in nine claims located in the same vicinity, and Hft then I bought a half interest in the original Raw- Hi hide claim, situated between Grutt Hill and Bal- Hfi loon Hill. Then with my three brothers, Emil, HS Fred and Leo, who had followed me into the HK camp, I bought a lease on Balloon Hill which we HS called Grutt Lease No. 1. That was in October. We opened up some very rich ore In this lease, and after working it for a short time, sold it to Goldfleld people. It is now known as the Kearns HHp lease, and is one of the richest pieces of ground KHf: ln the district. Kearns has sunk the shaft to a Hp depth of 90 feet and it is all in ore. The cross- H: cuts from the bottom have opened up about 50 H feet of ore that will run between $20 and $30 a Ht ton, and there is a 3-foot streak of shipping ore H that wIU averaSe $150 a ton- Keams has made two shipments to Goldfleld that gave not returns of about $140 a ton. . Then we opened up Grutt Lease No. 2, situated on the Wild West claim on Grutt Hill. The shaft is down 50 feet. The vein, which was Ave feet wide where we worked on it, pitched out of the shaft at the 25-foot point. We are now crosscut-ting crosscut-ting for the ledge, and should strike it witliin a few days. Up the hill about 150 feet from No. 2 lease, is our No. 3 lease, in which we have 5 feet of ore that averages about $G. We have incorporated in-corporated these two leases under the name of the Grutt Mining company, and witliin a few days after affecting our organization we sold 100,-000 100,-000 shares of the stock in Rawhide at 25 cents a shaxe. We also had a rich lease on the Mascot claim, situated on Grutt Hill, which has been incorporated incorpor-ated under the name of the Grutt Hill Gold Mining company, in which Captain John A. Hassell of Goldfleld is largely interested. The new company paid $45,000 for the leasing privileges on the Mascot Mas-cot claim. No work has yet been done on company com-pany account, but operations will be commenced within a few days. About three weeks ago a remarkable strike was made on the surface at a point about 40 feet from the shaft on our No. 2 lease on the Wild West claim on Grutt Hill. We first discovered float which assayed $22,500 a ton. Tracing this float up the hill, we scraped off eight inches of surface dirt and exposed a ledge from which with picks and gads w,e took out seven sacks of ore that is probably as rich as any ever found in the state. I would hardly dare to say how much it runs to the ton, but it is high up in the thousands. Wo have given away fully half of this ore as samples. sam-ples. No further work will be done at the point of this rich discovery until the company resumes re-sumes operations on Its own account. Murray Hill, which is situated just south of Balloon Hill, has some of the richest ledges in the district. The Rawhide Consolidated Mining company, which owns a group of claims on this hill, was recently organized and put out 50,000 shares of treasury stock at 20 cents. This stock is now selling in Rawhide at $1.25. Tho Mur ray lease, situated on Murray Hill, is probably the richest lease in the district. The shaft is" dowrT 85 feet and the bottom is in ore of exceptionally high grade. The ledge at the surface is between 80 arid 40 feet wide, and the entire ore body Is of good milling grade. South and east of the Murray Hill lease is the Pitting lease, also on Consolidated ground. The shaft is down 50 feet, and the crosscut at that level is developing some very good ore. - The Miller lease, situated on the Happy Holli- y gan claim, which lies on McLeod Hill, on the west side of the camp, has also developed some good shipping ore and a large body of milling ore. The Poor Boys group, which lies to the north of Grutt Hi) i, is one of the most promising properties prop-erties in the district. The claims He on the trend of the big dike that passes through Grutt Hill. About twenty leases are being operated on the Poor Boys, arid several of them already have shipping ship-ping ore, with every Indication that all of them will strike it. The Drew property, which adjoins the Poor Boys, was recently purchased by Milwaukee capitalists, cap-italists, who have Incorporated the Rawhide Mining Min-ing and Reduction company, and will commence active development work at once. The Royal and Tiger group, situated about two miles west of Grutt Hill, is one of the big bonanzas of the district. This property was recently re-cently taken over by Tonopah and Goldfleld operators, op-erators, who are sinking a shaft, which is now down about 50 feet. Three feet of the ledge runs $275 a ton as it Is broken down and goes into the sacks without sorting. In addition to this, there is an immense body of high-grade milling ore. I consider tho Royal and Tiger one of tho greatest properties in the state. The Alexander and Wlllmore leases, on the Roseberry group, lying south of McLeod Hill, pre very promising, both having a good showing show-ing of high-grade milling ore. In addition to the properties 1 have named, there are a largo number of promising prospects, scattered over an area Ave miles long by one and a half or two miles wide. .Town of Rawhide, Six Months Old, |
