Show if they will not buy as costly presents as usual this year, the spirit behind them will be just as exultant ex-ultant and that is what gives a present value. There is all the old joy. The sneak or the father to secure something without the knowledge of wife or children; the furtive, half-frightened mother's face looking out goodie-goodies for the children; the children pooling their funds to find something which will do for mamma, and the whisperings, the smiles, the joyous laughter when the feat Is accomplished, ac-complished, let us tell you there Is no Christmas carol sung in stately cathedral with all the accompaniments ac-companiments of organ and choir, that will ever reach nearer to heaven than tho laughter of children chil-dren when buying a Christmas present for mamma. And Salt Lake Is filled with that music on these days. And the city is growing beautiful very rapidly now. It is taking on metropolitan ways and looks. Within the past year many of its rough corners have been rounded: in places it Is taking on majestic proportions; art is adding grace to its architecture; the civic pride of tho city is expanding, expand-ing, and the improvements of today are an incentive incen-tive to more improvements tomorrow. And uie I city has been prosperous beyond all past expert- H ence during the year that is closing. Never before be-fore has the city been so gay as during the year up to the time the crisis, starting in New York, swiftly spread Its tontacles over the land. But It will be but a passing cloud. All the omens are all of good for the city. No other ;Ity in the west has any such fair prospects. From mine, frdm field, from range, from orchard; from every direction reinforcements are steadily gravitating this way', and with each year the magnitude of the business increases and the anthem of Progress swells louder loud-er and louder and there is no premonition that the music will ever cease. And "the city is beautiful for situation." Mountain, lake, valley and golden sunbeams all combine to make of it a picture of glory in a glorious frame. It certainly has a fu- ture as filled with promise as any on the continent. I |
