mantua at 8 in a halt hour more about tour four dozen horsemen and horsewomen were on their way for mount ben lomond the downing crowning peak ot of the wasatch range in northern utah crane brigham ellas and nels those wonderful scout leaders piloted the party whenever they said so ben would draw from his sack ol of signboard arrows a sign hoard board to he be nailed up by earl who was johnny on the spot A score of them were nailed up at important points in the trail to assist those poor wanderers coming after who might otherwise be helplessly alone three horses were left behind because bf three riders falling to appear all AH the rest went safely to the top docks plat was passed on the left and the devils gate cate road followed for some distance when the first inspiration point overlooking the mantua valley was reached prof wm win peterson expert geologist of the U A C gave a thirty minute lecture upon the geological history of the valley among other things he pointed out the cocat ion on of a rich bed of fossils i just east of the summit ot of the road that leads to cache valley and also the main boult lines of this region 1 A little farther on oil the company took to the right of the devil gate road on oil a trail up smiths canyon on the east side of a large mountain we talked of going to the big tree a mile or more to the east but the journey was too long we sang theres A long long trail etc when the top lop of the first watershed was reached on this trail a beautiful view of the 0 ogden den valley was ahead to the southeast A panorama of red yellow and green colors with touches of brown and tan lan were spread from the head of the north fork of the ogden river on down through the town of liberty and well into the valley we continued slightly upward along this watershed until we came to the real divide between north fork on the east and three mile alile creek on the west the reservoir is a short distance below on the right and in the distance in the same direction the great salt lake is in view and sections of the west side of 0 perry E W s party had come up on the west side of the mountain over ra la shorter but and more brushy trail the whole company here listened again to the he t very enlightening enins words of professor peterson about the layout lay out of the whole region about As the party moved on it was necessary tor for the guides to watch closely for th the e desired trail tor for at times it was quite difficult to see because of what had happened here at the time the willard flood occurred on the west side of the mountain we follow followed cd for some time up the east side of a higher mountain soon passing high spring and again later over a conspicuous bed of white quartz and then crossed over the watershed and descended somewhat into willard canyon this was the risky part ot of the trip as there were so many small washouts wa shouts all along this route which crossed a half dozen obstructive draws with a few broken down timbers limbers and continued Conti ned cued on page two A 1 TRIP OF BEN LOMOND CLUB continued frow from first page fag scattered rocks rock 3 most alost of 0 the way IK tale old trail had been obliterated since it was necessary to make quite a ca climb im b again before reaching tho lake at the head of willard canyon it was suggested that an effort bo be made to make a new trail which would not necessitate make the dropping down so low only to climb up again could wo we not go larther farther lip the high mountain before crossing over into willard cayon canyon and then find where a trail could be mado made which Is more inore or less level a and n d yet lead to the lake at times it waa very doubtful wilether whether all would dare to make this part of 0 the trip yes at one time one ot or our real broncho busters austers had a narrow escape his horse slipped backward into a wash several feet deep tile the dishop bishop quick as lightning shout ed jump from your horse jones treed freed himself at once dropped down dowil the hill like a falling rock but answered back 1 I am not hurt lucky for him he acted quickly since the horse floundered about in the wash in a mad scramble to regain its tooting finally all was restored to peace and safety A dozen horses reached the lake shortly after 12 ocl ocic we ve watched another g group r 0 u p 0 of t e eight ig ht come in sight a f few eva m minutes i n u te s 1 later at e r we wondered how low many would be left behind twenty minutes more however was all that passed before all were ait at the lake safely and a well marked path had been tramped down by 41 horses the rear horse had a much better path to follow than did tile the first one an inch of ice was on oil the lake the water was rather riley cattle and blue grouse were plentiful here our oar rest period and lunch was hardly over when the were snapped while grouped for the snapping a short program was held dean frank west ot of the U A C gave an inspirational talk and prof peterson showed us where a glacier had been supt bupt r read a proposed constitution and bylaws for the den ben lomond club it was adopted by unanimous vote vole and was signed later by every one of the company on oil the top of den ben lomond bishop wright was elected president alt alf freeman first vice president C elias jensen second vice president guinivere kotter secretary and roland madsen Hl adsen treasurer the trail above the lake was better than it had been just before getting to it the horses were tied within a fourth of a mile of the top no one will attempt to describe the inspiring sights on every side the view from the scottish ben lomond over loch lomond made immortal in scotts lady of the lake may suggest the same relative sight seen to the west but at best can be regarded as only natures miniature as compared with this much loftier peak and this most wonderful white and blue shore line in the distance and from a cal point of 0 view our without reservation that this is the most outstanding spot in this state or I 1 in any surrounding state do you realize that you are only 10 miles from this wonder As stated before every member of the company reached the top
