Show Senator and Apostle Smoot failed by a large margin to achieve a triumph in his speech at the Los Angeles banquet. It was no place to launch hyperboles regarding the dissensions in Utah, (for which he himself more than any other living person per-son is responsible), and it was a sad exhibition he made of himself. The real intent of the trip was the establishment of cordial relations between be-tween the terminal cities of the new route and in a way to advertise the great resources surrounding surround-ing the city by the salt sea. Under the circumstances, circum-stances, the raising of dust from the ash barrel of local scandals, was not only undiplomatic in the extreme, but was a very ill-mannered display and flagrantly ran counter to the real intent of the Salt Lakers in making the trip. Not much of the cult of the big metropolitan centers he has visited of late has clung to the lofty gentleman from Provo. |
