Show THE FATAL AUTO. H The bursting of a tire on an automobile when traveling at great speed causes it to swerve to one side and in nine cases out of ten to capsize. 'H The result is that to run an automobile at great speed is to jeopardize every life on board. But the exhilaration which goes with the speed makes 'H all in the death trap anxious to increase the mo- , IH mentum. Naturally timid women are affected in the same way that they were in the old steamboat j I racing days, when they vanted all the hams, bacon ba-con and lard aboard pushed into the furnace, and the safety valve tied' down. We suspect the rubber rub-ber inflated tire is intended to reduce the natural jar which the machinery would feel except for it. But cannot that be overcome in another way? Cannot the wheels be made solid and the jar relieved by springs? That is what is done on passenger cars, why can not some genius make a like adjustment for the automobile? It would probably lift the pausenger a little higher from the ground, but that would be better than a perpetual danger of death. The machine has come to stay, and every safeguard must be thrown around it. It is exacting more sacrifices of life than the steam engine did before men learned to construct safe boilers. In France they have attempted to limit the speed of automobiles by law, but that does not work well. The same excuse is made for breaking break-ing it that President Smith and Apostle Lyman give for breaking the law; not to would .be to fail to provide for the comfort of the ladies of the family. When a lady urges a chauffeur to run faster he is going to do it if he is killed in a minute. But they are not safe when speeding. The telegraph daily gives proof enough of that fact. And how can that danger be reduced? Surely Sure-ly there ought to be some American artist in steel that can solve the problem. |
