Show A SENSELESS SCARE. California is a good deal stirred up over the prospect of Philippine sugar coming in under a very light duty. Even her congressional delegation delega-tion is at sixes and sevens over the matter. All that seems silly under the circumstances. There are three or four large sugar beet factories in California, but they do not altogether make sugar enough to meet the annual increase in the demand. de-mand. At the same time the country is sending out $135,000,000 annually to pay for sugar that this country, so far, has not been able to supply. Again, the sugar area of the Philippines is at present limited, and then it is not the most profitable profit-able crop of the islands!. What manner of work would it require to enable the Philippines to supply what this country now has to purchase fll from foreign nations? iH |
