Show I GENERAL JOE WHEELER. 1 The old hero is dead. The spectre that passed him by on a hundred battle fields found nim at 1 last in the calm of his old age, touched the daunt- ' less eyes and closed them, and sealed in everlast- ing silence the lips from which so many clarion H, calls had come. He was the most picturesque man of his age, one of the bravest soldiers, one of the truest gen-H; gen-H; tlemen. H He fought for the south through four years of i victory and defeat, fought even to the last ditch, but when in tears he broke his sword over a cause J that was lost, he was not only sincere but he H never for a moment forgot what was duty. When H le was re-baptized a citizen of the great republic hs cherished no mental reservatio he gave an H allegiance that was absolute and ldfcsr he proved H his sincerity by offering his life again and again H in defense of and for the honor of the republic's Hj flag. His example was a perpetual notice to his H. fellow southerners that there was glory enough H in bqing a citizen of the United States, and that H it was a duty for every child of the republic to H help eradicate the scars made by the great wast- ing' war. He recognized that the war did not cojrie of man's planning, that unseen hands set K tjie 'stage and called the acts of the tremendous H tragedy, but that finally the red curtain had been Hi rysk down and there was nothing to do but repair the mighty waste and heal the awful heart-aches. He bore his part manfully at all times. As there yas no stain on his knightly sword, so he kept ' his honor bright among his fellqwmen. As he ! never asked his command to dare anything on the H battle field that he himself did not join in, so in Hf 1 tlje sometimes harder trials of civil life he never H failed to lead when the path of duty was marked I out. HE He will be passionately mourned in the south, K in the north the grief will be just as great, if H less demonstrative. He was an honor to his H kiqd, his grave will be a sacred spot always; his H memory will be an inspiration to the youth, of his H country so long as courage is cherished, so long H as integrity in reyered. May hp rest in everlasting H Pe.ace |
