Show Gompers and His Boycotts. Gompers, the so-called labor leader, went to Maine during the congressional campaign in that state to defeat Representative Littleflold. He ordered or-dered labor-union mon in Littlefield's district to boycott him. He miserably failed. At the same time ho ordered the labor unions in Illinois to boycott Uncle Joe Cannon at the polls. He mis- erably failed. He has ordered the labor unions '-'Jfl of California to boycott at tho polls Congressman 'H Gillette, candidate for governor. We hope he "jfl will fail there, though ho has a bettor show to ' ;1fl win for parties are more evenly divided than in Vjfl either Maino or Illinois. The reasons we hope -jfl he will fail are threefold: One is that the Re- ; publican party has made it possible to give thous- .jfl ,ands, tens of thousands, millions of laboring men ijfl employment at better wages than working men ' ijfl ever received in any other country since the be- 'fffl ginning of time. Again, working men and labor Ijfl unions never asked anything of the Republican ifl party that was fair and lawful, that it was not jH granted. A third and the chief reason is because fl when this foreign-born Gompers draws a quarter uJM of a million dollars from labor unions and with ',fjfl it goes out to corrupt voters and at the same .fl time to order members of labor unions who to vote for and who to boycott at the polls, he not , only takes on the most hideous form of a political j boss, . but he is aiming direct blows at tho very j jfl citadel of this country's liberties, and every Amor- J jfl ican voter should spring to tho rescue. 'Jfl What would Mr. Gompers say if some 'ilfl wealthy manufacturer or mine owner, should .draw jfl a quarter of a million dollars and with it go lifl into somo state to corrupt the voters and try to , jjjjfl induce voters' to vote against somo particular can- - jfl didate because he was a member of a labor union? ""fl We take it that Mr. Gompers does not yet un- : "jfl derstand that the true meaning of Liberty in this .ifl land means liberty under the law. Rather ho .fl seems to know no methods to carry his point ox- Jfl cept the methods of the master in his native coun- ; jfl . ty and of tho political loud-mouthed boss in this fl county. ''ifl True, he has some encouragement from dem- jjjjfl agoguo Americans who with their mouths ralso 'ifl up spooks to scare the people into electing thorn ifl to office, but wero they given the offices and the fl power they would never do more than mako a fl feint to do what they had advocated and prom- fl ised, for they would not daro to. :fl We take it that Gompers did not hope to ac- fl complish this year what ho was advocating, but jfl to work up a feeling which two years hence may . Jfl overthrow tho Republican party. That plan may . fl carry. If it does we shall see repeated tho ex- ?fl perionces of 1893-4 and 1895. Wo shall see hun- Mfl dreds of laboring men out of their jobs and their 'jjfl families suffering. And that shows just how far 1 .fl sighted and patriotic Mr. Gompers is. M |
