Show A Roosevelt Avant Courier! THERE does not seem to be a bit of doubt that ex-President Roosevelt is on the way home. One of his avant couriers reached New York last week. It came in the form of a python, which is over thirty feet long. Six of them were shipped from Singapore. They were stuffed to the full before they were put on board ship, and seemed to be in a torpid state, but the voyage was long, and one of them, four days before be-fore the ship reached New York, awoke from his ground-hog sleep and began to slash around. He succeeded in raising the top of the box that ho was in and got out on deck. There he enjoyed himself Immensely. The sailors tried to capture him and return him to his quarters. They did succeed in cramming cram-ming a plank into his mouth. Then he took the plank and tossed the sailors around with it like toys. As a last resort they fastened up the buH heads and gave him that compartment to hiiu-self, hiiu-self, and he was lord of all he surveyed when he reached New York. The last account was the captain was looking for a snake charmer. That is just as much a premonition of Col. Roosevelt's coming as a cloud is a premonition of a rain, but woe to the sailors that try to get a stick in the ex-President's mouth before he lands to keep him from talking. The python will seem like a plaything beside him. |
