Show After a rather Hat, stale and unprofitable week, so far as anything novel lii professional theatricals goes, society is to be treated to another an-other seven days which will contain nothing more exhilarating than a repetition or two of things ! seen before. However, it will give the herd a chance to save a pinch of change for the coming of Nazlmova, who will appear here for a solid week in the first real productions of the Ibsen plays that this city has been regaled with in many years. There are a large number of people here who have seen her in many portrayals and who swear by 'her cunning, and while those who come In for conference may hardly be expected to go mad over Mr. Ibsen, it is to be expected that the treat will be taking advantage of by enough theater goeis here and in near-by cities to make her engagement a memorable one. Ma dame Nazimova's repertoire during her stay in this city has not been announced as yet, but it Is assured that she will play all of her greatest successes. suc-cesses. 5 W Apropos of the present non-prohibition agitation agita-tion now going on under the leadership of the federal bunch, just how futile a prohibitive measure mea-sure would be can be judged from an argument made by Mark Twain while returning from h s last trip to Europe. A lady who was on the same steamer with him vouches for the truth of every word of It. She asked him his opinion of the prohibition pro-hibition law, and he replied. "I am a friend of temperance and want It to succeed," he said, "but I don't think prohibition Is practical. The Germans, you see, prevent it. Look at them. I am sony to learn that they have just invented a method of making brandy out of sawdust. Now, what chance will prohibition have when a man can take a rip saw and go out and get drunk with a fence rail? What is the good of prohibition if a man is able to make brandy smashes out of the shingles on his loof, or If he can get delirium tremens by drlklng the legs off the kitchen chairs" T t & The spring days that came with the beginning of the week renewed the hopes .of the society clans who spend the week-ends in motoring to Ogden, Provo, GrantsvIIle, and the country homos below town. It has seemed a long time since November No-vember when the last of the house parties and similar affairs took place, and everyone Is ready and anxious to fly to the country. There Isn't a much better way to spend Sunday than In a real motor, touring the beaten country paths and looking look-ing for new by-ways, hedges, an', r-etty retreats, and the first Sunday with the ro, dt, agreeable will see a string of motors going in every direction. By the way, the roads are not so bad as might be expected, and while, of course, trips to the canyons are out of the question for a couple of months, there are other delightful places waiting wait-ing for the first who venture out of town. & & & We note with glee that some of the hair Is coming off. Of all the ungainly, unbeautlful fads that women ever affected, the mounds, ropes, jute, and hemp that have been a part of her head gear for a couple of years, are the worst. Of course It won't all come off at once. The change would be too sudden; the lady's friend might not know her, and she might catch cold. So they'll just slip off a little at a time, and maybe by fall again thoy will look somewhat near normal. Possibly, too, with the passing of the hair, women may begin be-gin to think- little of being more dainty and less bizarre and fantastic. Really, If some of them had acquired the, habtt of ayoidlng extremes some years ago, there would not be so many on the waiting wait-ing list. - |
