Show Tribune Commends Gannon9 & AscLult M on 'RootsetJett Wk fl Xothing that has occurred during the present cpmpaign has so warned Republicans how grave-lv grave-lv the American party menaces the electoral ticket as did the speech of Honorable Frank J. Cannon, in which the Republican party was assailed and President Roosevelt overtly accused of dishonorable dishonor-able political negotiations with the leaders of the Mormon church. Senator Cannon has done the Republican party a great service In exposing the real intent of the bolting party of which he has become a champion. It was formed to defeat the Republican Republi-can state and electoral tickets, and now the whole design is revealed by one of its leaders. Republicans will now have no excuse for blindly following unworthy leaders who, while clamoring clamor-ing "Americanism" and "political purity" have unsheathed un-sheathed the knife of treachery. The Tribune has, from the beginning, endeavored endeav-ored to deceive Gentile Republicans into an alliance al-liance with their retaliation society by contending contend-ing that the organ would unqualifiedly support the Roosevelt electors. And yet Senator Cannon, In denouncing President Roosevelt, was the spokesman spokes-man for the party of which the chief owner and manager of the Tribune were the charter directors; direc-tors; and the organ definitely committed itself to this policy of antagonism to Roosevelt by a lavish lav-ish eulogium of Mr. Cannon's words, and the editorial edi-torial announcement, commenting on the speech, that "Mr. Cannon is doing great and patrotic service." ser-vice." That expresses the situation precisely. "Patriotic "Pa-triotic service" in this instance means service In the interests of Thomas Reams' plot to defeat the Roosevelt electors and elect the Democratic state ticket. The bolting organ will, of course, continue con-tinue its campaign of malice, but there Is some satisfaction sat-isfaction In the fact that in tho future at least it will not be able to conduct its warfare against tho Republican ticket from ambush. Here is a part of tho Cannon oration, reflecting upon the Integrity and honor of President Roosevelt, Roose-velt, which the Tribune commends as patriotic service: ser-vice: 'T say to you that this very spring and summor that nefarious bargain has been renewed. It started In Washington In the winter. The president presi-dent of the United States wanted a Roosevelt delegation dele-gation sent to Chicago; and as at that time tho groat Mark Hanna was alive, ho was foarful that Senator Kearns might take a Hanna delegation to Chicago. A bnigain was made by which tho Smoot investigation was to be postponed if Smoot would take a Roosevelt delegation to Chicago. Yes, It is tru(. Senator Smoot did take a Roosevelt delegation dele-gation to Chicago. The investigation did not take plaoe In Salt Lake." How do Gentile Republicans like this publicly uttered assault upon President Roosevelt from a loaded of the American party? What Is their opinion opin-ion of the organ which sanctions and approves it? What do they think of a party which is self-convicted of hostility toward the Republican electoral ticket of Utah? The most rabid professional Democratic spellbinder spell-binder would scarcely have dared to make such an accusation. Even so unscrupulous a campaigner as Mr. Burke Cochran would have hesitated to ac- cuse Theodore Roosevelt of being a party to so dls- H honorable a bargain. And yet the statement, bol- J jfl stored with tho editorial sanction of the bolting f jjfl organ, must be taken as an official announcement P'ijfl of the attitude of the American party toward the Ifl national administration. , fl Republican Gentiles who before wore slow to i.; jjfl believe that Thomas Kearns, In originating tho i jjfl bolting movement, deliberately planned the over- ! H throw of the Republican party in this state, are j jfl now no longer in doubt regarding the sinister pur- 1 f H poses of the Revenge Society. Many of those who I I fl were inveigled into joining the new movement f fl under a belief in the sincerity of Its originators 1 'jfl are indignant over the no longer concealed trend j ' fl of the movement developed in the speech of Sen- jfl ator Cannon. I jfl The issue is now definitely established, and jfl only one course remains for Gentiles who entered j fl tho society under the impression that its sole ob- ,jfl ject was to combat church influence. They should 'jfl repudiate the party, which was conceived in fraud j fl and is merely an adjunct of the Democratic party. j fl |
