Show B It is said the government is a little worried B over the question of labor on the Panama canal B and is trying to determine what race of men will B stand the climate best. When the Panama roll- B road was built six thousand white men, mostly B foreigners, died before the first half of the roaa B was completed. Then negroes from Jamacla B weie tried with almost as disastrous results. As HH a last resort lumbermen from the Maine woods B were sent for and they completed the road with- B out serious loss of life. But the Panama end Is B much healthier than the swamps outside of As- B pinwall. It is a tough country for any race to B work in, though the fevers are better understood B and easier handled than they were in the early B fifties. In those days it took but three days for B the fever to put out the life of a strong man. |
