Show I Sporting Life. B jlonday night before the Southern Athletic ub at Louisville, Ky., Terry McGovern will en-caor en-caor to regain his lost laurels from his former mqiieror, Billy Rothwell, better known under his dittos sobriquet of Young Corbett. It is now carlj a year since the latter trimmed up the Bce Terrible Terry in jig time at Hartford, Conn., ml gae the sporting experts in general a laying lit from which some of them have never recov- rnl For tho coming battle the two men and their sckers have been up against a wave of reform hioh at times narrowly escaped swamping them. ;en at tho present writing it is no sure cinch mt the fight will be pulled off on the date set as ie band of Louisville howlers, who are wildly ndeavoring to induce the powers that be to call ie ileal off, may force the governor or the mayor 5 act These officials, however, seem to be game, nil. so far as they can tip their hand, are in favor hhe big match coming off as slated. Both sides f tin c.se have been presented to them and their tdsion will in all probability bo favorable to not nlj Corbett and McGovern, but the general public. np test legal authorities have been consulted nd the consensus of their opinion is that there ; no possibility whatever of anybody's stopping ke fistic seance. The two principals are in mag-ificvnt mag-ificvnt condition and both claim they will put p the fight of their lives. McGovern says that he rill hae no excuse if he is on the losing end and s confident that he will reverse the decision of heir last meeting, while Corbett says he is cer-?in cer-?in that he will whip the Brooklyn terror as easi-;. easi-;. as lit did before. This dope may come right, utour Uncle Henry thinks not. McGovern fully edlizes hat a stiff lighter he is up against and bis time will be prepared for what is handed him. orbett'b ability was imprinted on his memory by ht simple process of beating it in, and lessons earned in that manner are never forgotten. The alue of thorough training was another point on huh McGovern was enlightened and his condi-ion condi-ion will be of that kind called "pink" Monday ight bout every sporting gent out in this part of iif country is strong on the Corbett dope and te their coin to back their opinions. Corbett, he argue, is faster and cleverer with fully as ard a wallop in either hand. This is very true 0 a certain extent. McGovern is not his equal t blocking or other defensive work, but he is a gbter from over the hills and if he gets one good rark at the Denver lad it will be a case of "send ovvers " But there is one point in the make up f the two men where Terry is apt to be the one he will do the sleeping stunt on the mat. Where rbett Is cool and collected while mixed up in 1 Writable shower of punches, Terry is apt to LM his head and fight wild, t irritates him be- control to have any man stand up in front lf him and stand him off with a spiteful jabbing pft until the times comes to whip over a right 'ng on to the "point." Otta Floto, the Denver sporting writer, who Is 1 warm admirer of Young Corbett, and who is porting all movements at the training quarters f le fight camps, makes the following statement: rilP little champion is in great shape, and I kant to go on record again, as I did at Hartford, Jat Yonig Corbett will defeat Terry in the easi-x easi-x km,i of fashion in their coming fight. I wish u to rpmember this. Wish you could come out ''re for a day or so. He is in 60 per cent better ' aPe than I ever saw him in my life. There is 0 "Bhtwpight, to say nothing of a featherweight l can hit him." So there you are. Place your The coming week will mark tho opening of the football season and for two months the pig- skin kniglits will hold full sway in the world of sport. The University boys will get out for their first regular practice next Tuesday, and will at once settle down for their first hard game, which will be with the Logan Aggies. Then comes their trip through the Northwestern country where they have games with the Universities of Washington, Montana and Wyoming. The High school bunch have been working out during the past week under Coach Boyle and will have a much heavier line up than a year ago. All Hallows have also started, but the material is light, and no coach has been secured as yet, although al-though Dick Richards, who handled the Logan Aggies last fall is prominently mentioned for the position. The Collegiate Institute will also have a mob of the long haired gridiron artists to represent them this fall, so that together with the hundred and one smaller elevens and school teams, the game bids fair to flourish around Zion this fall. Information has been received by Manager F. P. Goddard, of the Brunswick Alleys, that the Big Three bowling team would stop off at Salt Lake en route east and would while here give several exhibition games. They leave Chicago September Septem-ber 28th, going to 'Frisco by the southern route, returning to their homes via Salt Lake. |
