Show B LOOKS LIKE A MISTAKE. B Newly appointed officials sometimes make mis- B takes. Mayor Morris has made a serious one, B and we think if he will consult the law he will B reverse his action and stop a good deal of heart- Bj burning. He has made a clean sweep of the old H members of the Public Library Governing B Board and appointed a new board. He has re- B moved, so far as he could, some most faithful B and competent officials who have for years served B without pay and appointed a new Board, many B of whom are incompetent so far as any knowl- B edge of the duties of the office is concerned. His B summary act, in any other country but this would B be held as an insult to the old board, an insult B altogether causeless. B We are Informed also that the act is in flat defiance of the law; that the law gives the Mayor no power except to removo three old members and to appoint three new members on the first of July of each year. If this is true, and we suspect sus-pect it is, then the graceful thing for His Honor to do is to recall his order and to notify his appointees ap-pointees that his intention was good, but that he was a little too previous. In the meantime our advice to the old board is, look at the law, and If it is regular, as stated above, hold the fort. |
