Show CANADIAN RELATIONS. It seems there is a large emigration of Am ericans to Canada every year. This has increased from very low figures only ten years ago to nearly or quite forty thousand for last year. This must mean to the Eastern provinces and to Alberta only, for the emigration of Americans to British Columbia has been large, ever since the Klon-dyke Klon-dyke gold, was discovered, and the rich mines beyond be-yond the Northern border of Washington, Idaho and Montana. The causes are probably cheap lands, new manufacturers, and the preparations for building another overland railroad, together with improved facilities for sending cheap products pro-ducts abroad. The account says, this is offset in a measure, by the emigration into the United States of French Canadians, especially the Northeastern North-eastern states, where they now make up the bulk of factory workers. It would be interesting to watch this interchange of peoples. We do cot believe that Americans are going to become good Canadians, so far as accepting Canadian loyalty to Great Britain is concerned. If the Canadian French are really moving to make homes here, not to work for a season or two seasons and then go back they will soon get to be pretty Soi Americans. If they are all left alone, it will not he many years before Canada 'Will voluntarily come to s for a consolidation. We know that most of tne English and Scotch in Canada, and their children chil-dren are intensely loyal. To them the thousan years of British glory is a splendor. un like any other splendor, but thousands e of them, feel tugging at their clothing, little hands of grandchildren on this side of I line, and there is more of that with every year. B But the union of the countries will not be brought I about by sentimental considerations. The ma- B terial advantages are what are (by and by), to B control' the sweeping away of the imaginary B Hne between the countries, the wiping out of all B tariff lestrictions, a closer trade, unobstructed B communication; the clearing of the border of cus- B torn officials; these are the factors that will de- B termine matters by and by. |
