Show 1 THE U. S. S., THE a! P. AND HAYES. I Through the courtesy of the Associated Press I last week we were informed that the successor ft to Judge Van DeVanter, formerly assistant at- I torney for the Initerior department, had been named and that the position the successor vacated I was filled by a gentleman named Miller from I Lafayette, Indiana. This bit of news came as a 1 surprise, accompanied by a slight shock, to some f of us. 1 Billtowners, by reason of the fact itself, but If particularly because of the geography of the mat- 1 ter. Miller from Lafayette, Indiana. There are two Senators from Indiana. One, Fairbanks, now in the sere and yellow, skulking in the shadow of the other Senator, the ti great one, Albert John Beveridge. We of the West have been taught to I believe that Indiana has but the one Senator, tne great one, but the fact remains that Fairbanks has not yet been eliminated, though, of course, . completely overshadowed. In the matter of ap. pointments, Indiana is Beveridge. The local im-port im-port of this fact is that Beveridge was supposed to be the leader of the senatorial phalanx that was plugging for Arthur Booster Hayes. Kearns f was supposed to be in the skirmish somewhere, but Beveridge, he whom Hayes placed under eternal eter-nal obligations by his heroic attempt to honor ' the Hoosier Senator at the Ogden convention, Beveridge was the man who was to take care of Hayes "proper." It is unfortunate to be unfortu-j unfortu-j nate. There is a screw loose somewhere. Hayes has suffered a second defeat at the hands of his , friends and the Beveridge man from Lafayette has been exalted. If the proverbial little bird has. any explanation of this piracy let him get right up on his porch and twitter. If Hayes is not to 1 ' get anything, but is to remain in Billtown, the ad- ; J jutant of tricky Tommy, the people ought to know 1 f It. Another thing. If there is nothing coming to Hayes, where does Murphy get off at? This suspense is something awful. & 3 3 The failure of Hayes to cut the watermelon is taken in some quarters as an indication that Tricky Tom has ceased to be regarded seriously at the White House. Others say that so long as Murphy is in line to step into the shoes of the district dis-trict attorney when Hayes resigns, that the Murphy Mur-phy Hoodoo will operate against Arthur Booster to the finish. Another explanation is that Hayes made the fatal mistake of going to Washington when he had the Alaska Judgeship cornered and the president saw mm. More misfortune. Hayes got left; Murphy is out of a job; and the man trom Indiana, the great one, hasn't a word to say. |
