Show I V Society E&ent of the tOeeK H And now for the true talo of three merry mer- H ries who came to town with Anna Held, and who M left again, somewhat sadder, somewhat wiser, and M with a different idea of the meaning of a letter of m introduction. fl This story is published for two reasons. It is H rather good, and then it may serve to change an H t idea or two for the fellow the story is on has M heen practical knocker enough to switch it on aa- H Other man, and half a dozen young cats have M helped him in its distribution. H, In the first place this model young man was H doing a catch-as-catch-can stunt with this Sadie H girl, and by accident tore her glove. H "That's all right," he said, "go over and charge B another pair to me." She did. But she had two M friends who also needed gloves, and they needed H a lot of other things see-skin waists, something H known as "La Graquo," some other things the H side kind and well the list was long enough. B And they pretty nearly got them. It was this way. H After the purchase of the gloves, they got a trans- H fer check to another counter, and then the pur- H chase was easy. The things, some hundred and H eighty-five dollars' worth, got to the desk. Then B the manager got to the telephone, then back in H stock went the goods, and if the "fluffs" needed H them they probably got them in Frisco. It is too H bad they caught him by telephone, for he has H been small enough to spread the story on another. H The girls in the big store know, though. Don't H you, girls? M v v ae H An informal "baby" luncheon given during the H week was a good idea. No one was invited who H hadn't a youngster of tender years, and the lunch- H ( eon was sort of a note comparing affair. One wo- H man didn't bring her baby, giving as an excuse H the toast "Here's to my son and your daughter, B may they never meet." H All in all, it was a howling success. K tv v t5 H. The Emily Read tea on Monday was a cute H starter for the week. "All the girls" were there, H and there was plenty to do. The house was bright m ! with jonquils, and big log fires, and the afternoon H was awfully cosy. B b?V Vv H The last society gambol was squeezed in H on Tuesday evening, when Mrs. McClure invited a M few friends to a charity keno party which started M j at 8 p. m., and met Ash Wednesday half way. It B j was in honor of Mrs. Clement, who is here for a H few days before going to Mexico, and was one of B the very smart affairs of the week. B & & B' The Powers dinner Saturday evening was an M attractive affair in red, and one of the prettiest W events which has taken place at the Powers home B during the season. jj $ $ & M The Japanese affair of Mrs. I. O. Rhoades was H( a pleasant function on Monday afternoon. Every - m thing in detail and decoration had an air of the ; Orient, lightened by golden daffodils, and the H scheme was very effective. H) & & & Hj The Washington Birthday dinner given by Cap- H tain and Mrs. Barth at the Fort Monday evening H was a charming event. The decorations were M symbolic of the day. B Miss Lora Schoppe entortained at cards Mon- M day evening. H Another clever entertainment in honor of Miss H Hattie Jennings was the card party given for her V on Monday afternoon by Mrs. A. W. McCune, Jr. B Mrs. Robert Smith's luncheon at the Commor- B cial club was a charming evont, given for a dozen guests. Reed, by her daughter, Mrs. Robert Glendinning, was an exquisite affair. Ferns and plumosa were arranged the length of the table, and a striking centerpiece of roses, carnations, and tiny lights, made an unusually pretty effect. Violets were at each guest's place, and pink shaded candelabra were used to good effect. About twenty-five ladies enjoyed the event. tJv v t One of the sweetest Inncheons of the week was the pink and white affair given by Miss Frances Howat on Tuesday.
