Show The Chinese exclusion act will expire by Uml I tation in a few months and whether it shall be I renewed is a question which is liable to intrude I itself into the coming Presidential campaign. It is a tough question, too. Contractors want coolies I to dig the Panama canal; the Southern cotton I planters want Chinamen; the fruit men of Call- I fornia and Oregon want Chinese help for the I double reason that the Chinaman will work cheap- er than the white man and do better work than the class of white men who are willing to work H on California farms. Then all over the United I States families are giving up housekeeping be- cause of the scarcity and inefficiency of the help H that is offered.
