Show WERE THEY BARBARIANS AFTER ALL? - H The News copies lovingly from the St. Louis H Globe-Democrat a flabby dissertation on the Smoot 'M business, .the burden of it being that as Mr. Smoot H is not a polygamist and as he denies that his de- H yotion to the Mormon church Is paramount to his H allegience to the government of the United States, H then the case against him fails. Can the Globe- H Democrat explain why the Latter Day Saints were H driven out of Missouri some sixty years ago? If H there is no case against Apostle Smoot then it H must be true, as Mormons have always, affirmed H that the Missourlans were robbers, murderers and H barbarians; that they were as devoid of pity for the weak as they were of any sense of justice. De- S votlon to a church is all right, but when a church includes likewise a temporal goverment, a thor- oughly earth-formed and earth-directed machine, H and it is part of the rule of the church that no S member may disobey this rule, that it is higher than the Declaration of Independence or the Con- stitution of the United States, and when In prac- H tice it has placed the civil government of the state of Utah in absolute subordination to a creed and at the same time has acquired such power in six jfl neighboring states that every representative in fl congress from those states all save one is an at- fl torney in congress for this same church, is it not ' about time for the country to stop and consider the menace that this institution is to the republic? The laws will not permit a foreigner to take part fl in our government, but the citizens of a foreign B HI1M' pilll Ah 'i government in our midst can, in the name of re- flUffi If I'll flr Hgion, take full control of a sovereign state, trample HK'fl U ig the Constitution under foot and absolutely subordi- Hill I I I H Hn ' nae tlie eiv11 Power of the state to a creed and find fli I 'JHffi ' ' defenders on every side.
