Show I II Sporting Life. Hk ifl The iistic carnival hold at Butte on the 13tu H" 11 was probably the best pugilistic fiesta ever wit- L mm nessed in the Northwest. Both wero fights be H'b tween men who occupy the pinnacle of gladiatorial R 5 talent. H MM The mill which attracted most attention in KfljJ! , Salt Lake was the one in which Aurelio Herrera R. )l M " nd Kid Broad crossed swords for the feather- B PI' i mM f 5f weight supremacy. The unmistakable victory ol HL 1 I the Mexican was no surprise to local sports. B fill Those who saw this wonderful lltle fighter In hi& B h Salt Lake contest expected that his unequalled II guard and that marvelous punch which retired H 11 plucky Jack Clifford from the ring believed that HCll Kid BrQa(i would go down under that terrific II blow. In defeating Kid Broad, one of the reugh-H reugh-H S a est and fiercest fighters of his time, the Mexican H b M demonstrated that he is one of tho greatest fight-I fight-I mm ers Irx ls class in tuo world. His guard seems H fill tor be absolutely impenetrable, and it will prob- i ably prove an unsolvable mystery to greater2fight-III greater2fight-III ers than Kid Broad, of whom there are very few. H m There are probably only two fighters In the light-111 light-111 weight class who could send the bellicose young H I m Mexican to the mat. They are Hanlon and Young HI I Corbett. It is a question among sports through- II1 out the Northwest if either of these two bruisers HIM would bo able to cope successfully with this new HI I stellar light in the pugilistic firmament. Han-Hl Han-Hl 1 Ion uses the same method of defense as the Mex SSI i ! Ij1 i lean, and would probably give him a tougher fight HP ' than any of the scrappers he has met recentl fffl . It will be remembered also that Young Corbeti fifl solved the Herrara style of guard when, he met nkf' Hanlon in San Francisco, and made that husky Hf ring general discard it in the second round. gff Corbett in reality is the man to be reckoned HMj with by Herrera. His wonderful speed and force Hl and his ability to brush aside a guard like Her- Hifr rera's would probably make him the likely win- Hj! ner in case of a contest between the two men. H At the same time there would be no lack of Hr f f backers for Herrera in case of a contest between H t him and the champion. Throughout the North- H ' ! west there would be enough Herrera money to Hkl cover an acre of Navajo blankets. Certainly a HH$ fight between these two little giants would be H. the most interesting contest of years. And. if the H$it conqueror of Terry McGovern can demonstrate Hfjj his ability to brush aside the Herrera guard and Hf! ear up un(er n8 shattering right swing he will H demonstrate at the same time that he Is probably Hi'M the greatest fighter in the world. Mi Js j (3 t? 7V Hi- 'The contest for the white lightweight cham- H, , pionship, fiercely fought by Jimmie Britt and B i' Jack O'Keefe, was the most gory and spectacular K1 fight that Butte ever witnessed. For twenty Hfp rounds the two sluggers hammered each other Bj mercilessly and at the end of that time not even 'n'1 the boosters for the two pugs disagreed with the referee's decision that the bout was a draw. The contest was a fast one from the beginning and neither man at any stage of the battle had any particular advantage over his opponent. In the twelfth round Britt had O'Keefe going some, but the Irishman quickly recovered, and from that time until the finish the honors were about even. Britt, who was generally picked as the winner by the talent, is anxious for another go, and another struggle between the two will probably prob-ably be arranged in tho near future. t5 5 v Young Mauro Herrera, brother of Aurelio, demonstrated that he came of some good fighting stock by decisively defeating Howard Opie, after the young Mexican had received enough punishment punish-ment to send any ordinary punishment-destroyer down for the count. Like his older brother, young Herrera has that essential of all great pugilists, the sleep impelling punch. iv 2 2 The Ogden team still leads by a small margin in the race for the inter-city championship. It seems difiicult to figure just why Ogden should uniformally give the local team a drubbing. There is nothing remarkable about tho Ogden team, except ex-cept what might be referred to as its compactness compact-ness and the ability of the Junctionites to rise to an emergency and to beat out tho winning run when it is needed. The locals could survive a good deal of overhauling, and some changes in the infield could be made without hurting the aggregation. ' |
