Show ill Sporting Life. j j ; Mr. Mulvey, the Promoter, is probably pret- .J Jl " I ty well satlsfled with himself over the fight he Bl ; 1 engineered at Ogden between Clifford and Queen-Si Queen-Si Jift an, even if ho did lose a few sesterces on the B I ;i I bout. Even If It was necessary for the Promoter H f : ! '; to pull off the mill In an outside city, far from H' f ' ! l ' the scene of the Downey downfall, the Ogden Hi I ; , encounter partially salved over the chafed mem-H' mem-H' I ; ory of that greatest of fakes, and the public are H j '-' J 'i now advised that Mr. Mulvey can really manage H tf ill '$ a fight with some degree of success when all H !,j 8 a , k conditions are favorable. Maybe at some time H ri l'' in the glimmering future, if he continues to be B I I " gopd, the mayor will permit him to manage an-Wk an-Wk M I , other bout in Salt Lake. B ; i It seems, passing strange that the Promoter B ! ,, should have so insatiable an ambition to establish B i himself as a fistic manager, as all his late ex- H I j , j1! periments have been failures financially. Even H j Ml the Root-Gardner go cost him a long -line of sil- H h j,; yor foil. Possibly it is the soothing, presence of B ! j ' w Honest Jim Donaldson at his elbow that inspires B pi j the -Promoter with a desire to make a lurid dls- B !j i j f ,'play on the pugilistic flats. B i j f At all events, 'every man has his own idea B 1 i . , of what constitutes the last reaches of human B ,i f i bllss- and as long as Mr Mulvey manages such B vjt fights as the Ogden mill, everyone will be willing B II h to cheer him as a Promoter. B jfi ,, The Queenan-Cllfford contest was one of the B ft prettiest struggles ever witnessed in these parts. B ,,-. The exhibition certainly deserved better patron- Hh ,, 1 ,L nge than it received. Ogden passed it by with B ( 1 I, n fleeting nod, and the bulk ot the audience, ex- Bj Is j ! elusive of Tom Pheeney, were from Salt Lake. B , :;1 ' It was what is known in pugilistic parlance as B ' i jail, j a gruelling contest, and the battle went hammer B j! "J ' And tongs from the beginning. Jack Clifford B if , I showed improvement over his old form, but was B A I unable to land the punch that quiets on his hard B yj I hitting opponent. Queenan was fat and vicious H i i , it knd absorbed punishment like a school boy at a H i '','' strawberry festival. They are so evenly H i it matchod that there was scarcely a moment when H f j-Jj, one' of the men seemed to have any appreciable B j ; j advantage over his antagonist. As both men are H I "' X aspiring to meet some of the famous bruisers H j j in ; I in their class, it is probable that another go will H 'if be arranged between Clifford and Queenan to H i j decide which of the two is better entitled to H- ,!Ly -5 meet some of the leading artists. I 'Liili Je "WJalcott caused great consternation re-11' re-11' ' Iff it cently among the fashionable set of Maiden, LlLt I Pill Mass., by purchasing a $5,000 house next door B Inlfi to the residence of the wealthiest men in the-B the-B pf '' city Joe s now Hvjng there with his wife and B f, j fife four children. The neighbor kicks mightily at B Hi It' being next door to the home of a colored pugi- HBH mi h ! 8 '. , a a S ' ' flfi fi list," but Joe himself takes very kindly to the new fli f'fif ' location. When asked what he would sell out for, B' i'f Walcott announced that he wasn't In the least l ! t ' anxious to leave, but would consent to selUfor a 1 l! yil,L aLj ! fat advance on what he paid for it. That looks like a better graft than prize fighting. V VyT Manager S. J. Kelly of the Shamrock Club has made all the preliminary arrangements for a match between Buddy Ryan of Chicago and Ru-fus Ru-fus Turner of Seattle, to take place in Salt Lake In the near future. Articles of agreement have also been forwarded for a match between Tommy Wallace of Fort Erie and Jerry McCarthy of this -" city. Ryan and Turner are fast lightweights and would give an exhibition that wpuld gladden the souls of local sports. An effort will be made to have the two fights on the same night, and a double header would not only be a noveUy in Salt Lake, but would furnish the. locals with a pugilistic pugilis-tic fiesta which would make everyone forget his troubles. Sig. Hart, manager of O'Keefe, is handling hand-ling Ryan, and he can assuredly be depended upon not to flash a dead one. The Shamrock Club article of agreement . have been drawn up in such a way as to head off the grafters and debar penniless fakirs. Each of the principals will be forced to put up a forfeit of $250 before the meet, the amount to be forfeited for-feited if the mill is not satisfactory. With such safeguards for patrons of a fight, there would doubtless be no objection on the part of the mayor may-or and council to the fights coming off here. The action of the mayor was merely to protect the public against such bogus bunches as the Downey affair. o && John Hertz will be here either tonight or tomorrow to-morrow with Martin Duffy and Benny Yanger. Manager Kelly will make an effort to secure a match between Duffy and McCarthy and Jack Clifford and Yanger. If this can be arranged, and it looks probable, it would be an extremely attractive card. A match between Clifford and a man of Yanger's fighting ability would be particularly par-ticularly enticing to local lovers of the game. |
