No one but relations and the most intimate friends were present, to wish Lieutenant and Mrs. White all happiness, and the ceremony per-foimed per-foimed by Dr. Paden was simple and sweet. The infoimal reception which followed was most delightful, de-lightful, the Jacobs home being a bower of beauty, of flowers, smilax and palms. They left at midnight mid-night for San Francisco. e vt & The announcement of the engagement of Miss Ida Noble to Mr. Lewis C. Robinson, was followed by the congratulations ol their many friends during dur-ing the week. The announcement has been expected ex-pected for some time. The wedding will take place a week from next Tuesday, at the Noble home on East Brigham street. je Mrs. John Woodward made a cute remark at tne Jacobs-White wedding. The bride was trying to escape the rice that fell in showers as she was leaving, when Mrs. Woodward, who has spent some time in Manila, called out: "Might as well get used to it before you get to the Philippines. Sometimes you'll have to live on it for a month." & & Fuiious fun for fully five hours will bt the program pro-gram for the Pi ess Club banquet which takes place at the Commercial Club next week, and already a mob is pleading for invitations. There will be local burlesques to outdo anything ever seen or heard in these parts, for the boys must live up to their famous reputations (for fun) and the banquet will be a pippin from soda to hock. With the generous spirit always manifested by the scribes, the price of each plate has leen cut from one dollar to ninety-eight cents, a bargain bar-gain few will overlook. It has been thought best to do this, by a committee as wise as a tree full of owls, which recognizes the temporary stringency strin-gency in the money market, and particularly in the Press as individuals. A combination in wedding colors that seems to have grown very popular of late is brown and silver. sil-ver. A new society stunt that is becoming very popular elsewhere is the Leap Year dinner, where a lady toastmaster presides, and all of the ladies at the table are called upon to make a few remarks. re-marks. Clever doings if worked smartly, but a difficult affair to arrange in this city, because so few of the society ladies do any talking. & & & On account of the proximity of the club and the things to drink therein, Christensen is seriously ser-iously thinking of padding the Avails of the hall, before society again enters the portals. & ZZ & The smartest dinner of the week was that given by Miss Webber to about twenty friends on Thursday evening. & & Sleigh rides with supper at the Country Club seem to have been the thing the past week, with a dinner or two to break the unprecedented monotony. mo-notony. & The winter season to date has been the dullest experienced here in ten years, and the inertia of summer months is nothing compared to the deathlike stillness in the social atmosphere. Are people economizing, are they lazy, or are they simply tired of seeing one another, like the members mem-bers of a certain club in town, where each member mem-ber has an individual table at which to dine. If things can be any duller during the season of sackcloth sack-cloth and ashes, living ought to be cheaper. And speaking of the Lenten ashes to be used this year, I heard two maids the other evening compromise on those from Egyptian Deities, with . straw tips. |
