The only officers not affected are the mem-B mem-B bers of the police department, whose salaries may B be raised at any time under the statutes of 1899 B by the action of the mayor and council. B The demise of the salary ordinance clips B ?1,000 from the salary of the mayor, which should B never have been less than $2,500 and extinguishes B ?300 a year from the city auditor, who is one of B the hardest working officials in the city and county B building. B But the official whose grief was greatest was B Councilman A. J. Davis, who captured the long B term in the Fifth by a narrow margin. When the K councilmen are elected two years from now, they B will be paid on the basis provided in the ordl- B nance $G0 per month, while the astute politician B from the Fifth will have to be content for that B Period with $35. With this meagre remuneration, B Ir- Davis will probably be less anxious next timf B grasp a place on all the important committees. |
