Show VI? 1 I STOP THIS EVIL. mU Vol ! x Owing to conditions which are almost unavoid- Hgfi Hjj, able, there are many unpleasant occurrences at Hfflh' i the local summer resorts each season, and HE j( while they are too frequent to notice, there are IHf ' 1 1 some things which can and should be stopped Hf j'j at once. HB , We refer in particular to the little girls who Hrai ' ;J , sell sandwiches at the Salt Palace, and if there H6 i is no society for the prevention of vice, the police Hei I would do well to look into the matter at once. Hi These youngsters, b rights nice-looking little HI gills, appear to be ten or twelve years old, and Hi' afternoon and evening they vend their wares at Hg ' the beer-slopped tables in the bowery of the popu- ma lar resort. HE Not that the beer and the tables should not be H there, but a curfew ordinance shouid keep the chil- B ' i dren out, for they witness scenes that cannot Bjj i, j. make a very favorable Impression on the childish Rhijl mind, and they are subject to coarse remarks B W from many a drunken bully and bum. H ' Mp As an Incident of this, a vag prize fighter and B ' four other toughs were fighting the booze at the B ' Palace the other evening, and one of these little Bj girls came along and asked them if they'd have E sandwiches. B "Who in hell are you 7" inquired one of the Hj i gentlemen; "Wise up to her shape," remarked an- B uther, and "Where did you get them feet, gal?" Bj ' sneered another. B' Child labor under such conditions calls for Bj speedy relief, and something must be done at B once B' Just at the timo when children should be most H .' interested in the bright sunlight and running H f i brooks, it is not conducive to a healthy condition of the mind to have them come in contact with red lights and running suds. |
