Show Hy R Sports. : j, THE BASEBALL SITUATION WHIRLWIND H ijjf DELMASBOXING GOLF TENNIS. B ! If, Hfif ilk Every loyal fan is praying the crisis in the B E affairs of the Salt Lake base ball club is past, and B jj that with the, now management whooping things JP ' up the Elders will finish the season. H$r One sad-eyed enthusiast remarked the other 1 day that the team would finish in last place, and B would have a hard time doing that, but now that BL is ftU we ask. For the future is what must be con- ?i , j sidered, and if a six or eight team league can be Bp ;l established next spring, the base ball horizon Bp ' ' will be dappled with roses. K, The little game to sell Big Weed and Cherub B ' Muller, if effected as planned, would have been a B ( disantrous proceeding, and when Dad Clark and B 1 1 ' Harrison Shepard stepped into the breach with B ;'! the announcement that they had plenty of flnan- B i' cial backing, the heart of the fan dropped back B t into proper place. They have urged the men to BLf , do their best until the end of the season, and as Bj the boys in blue have signified their willingness B" to work hard, every fan should go to the ball B '; grounds at every opportunity to help the game B along. B Three costly errors were responsible for as B many defeats in the first games with the lads B from the1 copper camp this week, but the games Bl j wore worth seeing at that, and Wednesday's per- B, f'; formance was full of the stuff from the ginger jar. iB' In the literal sense it was truly "misable luck," on that day, that the Elders did not win, and many think that the two clever assists by Slats Davis at the first pillow had as much to do with the Dutte victory as the skyward throw made by Weed. Slats is about the best we have had behind be-hind the slab, but these decisions certainly looked to the sand paper from the grand stand. However, How-ever, the best make mistakes, and S. Davis has made a very fair umpire. Individually the Saints have a good bunch of fielders, and every performance of a certain Mr. Delmas during the past week has won him more friends. He jumped in and pitched the game on Tuesday, and showed up in wonderful form as a slab artist in one of the fastest games of the season, sea-son, and his fielding in the second battle was a marvel. Del's batting has not been the subject of any amount of joy among the fans, but they will forgive him everything for the terror he has caused out where the garden begins to grow. He is a bit the fastest young man that it has been our pleasure to see. Ferrin, the new fat boy in the right tulip patch, has not proved himself a whirlwind, though he hasn't many errors on his scroll. His batting has ueon rather pathetic, but then he is very new, and has faced some of the best twirlers in the league, a fact calculated to contort the nerves of any new player trying to make good. & JX J& The Smoketown Swatters have improved wonderfully won-derfully since their last appearance here, and they v,iew the future through topaz glasses. As., one remarked going through the gate, "Why dis is a pipe; we'il win out in a walk; ye see, cully, dere's five weeks for us at home; nottin to it, l tell yu', nottin' to it." Just one more week of ball, and then our bluebirds blue-birds fly north for several weeks. Be a real fan, and back up the game. Go down and spend four bits. Don't stay up town and knock. t & & A groat deal of local interest centered in the Hanlon-Nelson battle, which took place in San Francisco last evening. A fair amount of betting was indulged in with plenty of Nelson mazuraa in sight at the prevailing odds, for the earner of the tit.e of Battling certainly made good in his go with Welch in this city. Hanlon was a strong favorite with the fight followers on the coast. j? & That mill between Frankie Noil of San Francisco, Fran-cisco, champion bantam weight of the world, and Hughey McGovern of Brooklyn, who took place at Philadelphia on Wednesday night, must have been tho fiercest ring battle of the year. The accounts of the fight state that it was the most vicious contest con-test ever seen in the Quaker City, and some of us who witnessed Brother Noil's performance on June 17th are prepared to believe every thing tho wires flash. He Is the greatest bantam weight in the world, and it ought to bo a long, long time before be-fore any mit weilder puts him to the mat for the count of ten. The golf contest for the Leyson cup begins at Butte today, and Artie Copp's drivers have promised prom-ised us that they will return victorious. If such records as the team has made on the local links are any criterion, it Is a shame to do what they will do to the Smoke Eaters, but there are two sides to the question which will be decided by tomorrow to-morrow night. 5 e & Two definite rules have been decided upon by the Country Club tennis committee in regard to the contest for the Newhouse trophy. The entries en-tries will be closed September 15th, and no temporary tem-porary club members will be allowed to enter. The technical rules to govern the tournament will probably be made by a number of men selected by the committee. jit jx jx Interest Is at present centering In the state tennis tournament to be held next month. The Schramm cup, and other handsome prizes, have done much to stimulate the growing interest In the sport. & & & The Bport at Calder's tomorrow afternoon ought to be oxciting enough for anyone. With ten or fifteen motor cars entered for th,e races, Including the superb Pope Toledo belonging to Samuel Newhouse, and with a five-mile motor cycle race for a side bet of ?150, the winner to take all, the boys will be going some. Bert Fuller ran the mile In the Newhouse Winton on Thursday in 1:59 3-6, and feels confident confi-dent that he can do It under 1:30 In the Pope Toledo. The track is in fine condition and Chauffeur Fuller expects no dilliculty in his trial against time. H. L. Cummlngs, the Eastern expert, will accompany ac-company Fuller on hi. trial, while the auto-fans pipe off the speed of the handsomost machine In the state. All in all, the day promises to be a peach for the "bubble" sport and a fine crowd is expected at the track. |
