Show The announcement of Senator Kearns of Utah that he will not be a candidate to succeed himself In the United States Senate is understood here to mean that his colleague, Reed Smoot, the Mormon Senator, has gotten the reins of control in his hands and has crowded Mr. Kearns out of the Republican Re-publican leadership in that state. In the State convention, recently, Smoot's candidate was nominated nomi-nated for Governor, although Senator Kearns wanted Gov. Wells renominated for another term. The Democrats are pleased at this contest for leadership, for they think they see in it a chance for Utah to go Democratic this fall. Pittsburg (Pa.) Gazette, September 18, 1904. |
