Show Area Obituaries David Charles Jones ESCALANTE - David Charles Jones, 44, of Escalante, Utah, was killed in the line of duty on a DUI traffic stop on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. He loved his job and loved the remote areas he worked. He was born Apr. 19, 1958, in Augsburg, Germany, to Frank Edward and Ruth Mary Leiby Jones. He married Carolyn Sabin, Jan.30, 1980, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. David was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he served as Elders Quorum President, in the scouts, a teacher, and as Ward Mission Leader. He served a full time mission in Hamburg, Germany David served in the Army and Army Reserve. He completed POST training in Salt Lake City in March 2000. He worked as a Deputy for the Garfield County Sheriff's Department for the last 16 months. He loved the out- Othello "Their Barney ESCALANTE, UT Funeral services for Othello "TheH" Barney, 88, of Escalante, Utah, who passed away January 22, 2003, in Salt Lake City, Utah were held Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Escalante Stake Center, Escalante, UT. He was born September 18, 1914 in Escalante, Utah, to Scott and Sytha Lay Barney. He married Roena Lay, September 17, 1935, in Junction, Utah. The marriage was solemnized solem-nized in the Manti LDS Temple. She preceded him in death, January 9, 1966. He married Roxie Lay August 9, 1968, in the Manti LDS Temple. Thell spent 31 years working for the Garfield Road Department Depart-ment and nine years with the UDOT planning division. He spear headed the renovation of the Escalante Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Roxie, Escalante; children Gerald (Carol) Barney, Escalante; Escal-ante; 11 grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; step-children, Maureese Epling, Marysvale; Dee Lynn (Janet) Fautin, Marysvale; Carla (Rodger) Dennis, Layton; 14 step-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grand- p UT"--. Funeral services were officiated offici-ated by Bishop Jeff Rex with a nephew, Wayne James offering the family prayer prior to the opening. Prelude and postlude music was provided by Areola Gates Cora Frances Griffin Shakespear ESCALANTE, Utah - Cora Frances Griffin Shakespear, 93, of Escalante passed away Jan. 22, 2003 in Panguitch, Utah. She was born Sept. 10, 1909 at Kannarah, Iron County, Utah to Orlow H. and Dora Elizabeth Roe Griffin. She married David Harmon Shakespear Sept. 17, 1954 in Escalante. The marriage mar-riage was solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple June 8, 1957. He preceded her in death Dec. 1, 1987. Cora was a member of the LDS Church. She served a mission mis-sion to the southern states. She taught classes in Sunday School for many years. She was active in the Senior Citizens in Escalante and in the singles organization in the Escalante LDS Ward. For many years, she worked for and resided in the home of LDS President and Mrs. George Albert Smith. She also had been employed by the Remington Arms Company in Salt Lake City. David was well liked and appreciated in his community commu-nity he will truly be missed. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Escalante; children, Brian Andrew Jones, Ft. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Lorena Griffin and Berthene Griffin. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, David Harmon Shakespear, brothers, Lamont, Leslie, Vernile, Vernon, and Leland; sister Ethel; and sisters-in-law Robert William Jones; Jacob Samuel Jones; Sarah Kathleen Jones, all of Escalante; parents, Ruth Mary Middleton, Kingsport, Tenn.; Frank Jones, Brigham City; brothers and sisters: sis-ters: Paula Lindsay, Hillsboro, Ore.; Carol Roberts, Salt Lake City; William E. (Nancy) Jones, St. Paul, Minn.; Merry E. (Jim) Reed , South Jordan; James M. (Linda) Jones, Pleasant Grove; John P. (Jody) Jones, Brigham City; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. mem-bers. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Escalante Stake Center, where friends may call on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday from 1 1 a.m to 12:30 p.m. Burial will be Saturday at 1 1 a.m. in the Orem City Cemetery with military rites. Funeral directors: Neal S. Magleby & Sons Mortuary, Richfield. with another nephew, Jim Alvey rendering the invocation. A musical selection, "Escalante Song," was performed per-formed by Lynn Griffin, followed fol-lowed by a tribute from a close friend, Freeland Alvey. A granddaughter, Ronda Barney and step-daughter, Maureese Epling both provided tributes. A musical selection, "These Hands," was then sung by Lynn Griffin, followed by remarks from Bishop Jeff Rex. A step-grandson, step-grandson, Craig Dennis offered the benediction. Compassionate services were provided the Escalante LDS Ward Relief Society Sisters. Pallbearers were Jim Barney, Don Barney, Shawn Mitchell, Terrence Mitchell, Dee Lynn Fautin, McRay Epling, Frank Branch and Wade Barney. Honorary pallbearers were Hayden Barney, Braxton Barney, Brady Barney, Kody Barney, Jesse Barney, Daylan Barney, Haylee Barney, Krystal Mitchell, Scarlet Smith and Jessica Johnson. Burial was in the Escalante Cemetery with a nephew, Barney Alvey performing the dedication of the grave. Funeral directors were Neal S. Magleby & Sons Mortuary, Richfield, UT. Hazel Griffin and Alice Griffin. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 in the Tropic LDS Ward chapel where Bradley Griffin gave the family prayer. Officiating was Fred Syrett. Prelude and postlude music was provided by Karen Ott. Malen Mecham gave the invocation and the congregation sang, "I Believe in Christ", chorister cho-rister Kathy Shakespeare. Speaking was Stan Mecham, followed by the Tropic Ward choir singing "How Great Thou Art". Bishop Fred Syrett provided closing remarks and the congregation congre-gation sang "I Stand All Amazed". The benediction was offered by Janis Willis. Pallbearers were Bradley Griffin, Sharon Griffin, Alan Griffin, Wade Barney, Robert Willis and Stan Mecham. Burial was at Tropic Cenetery where Wade Barney dedicated her grave. Funeral directors: Neal S. Magleby & Sons Mortuary, Richfield, Utah. |
