Cantu Captures First Place In Barrel Race Competition BRYCE Twelve-year-old Christina Cantu, a 6th grader at Bryce Valley Elementary, captured first place in the recent 6th Annual C-Bar-C Winter Series Barrel Race in St. George in fierce competition against some 100 adults. Cantu was the youngest competitor ever to win in the 4-D Target Saddle Open division competition where a total of 111 skilled riders fought for the coveted prize. In barrels competition the racer makes an initial run in the best time possible, and later attempts to match the first run as closely as possible. Cantu's first run was made in 18.258 seconds, and her second in 18.253, with only a winning .005 seconds separating the two. Cantu is a member of the National Barrel Racing Association and the Cedar City Barrel Racing Club. She and her 10-year-old brother Benjamin also compete in pole bending. She is a daughter of Jerry and Debbie Cantu of Bryce Canyon National Park. Rodeo competition is a family activity for the Cantu family. |
