Tournament Surprises PHS Bobcats Take Region Title By John Yardley In somewhat of an unusual Region Re-gion 15 boys Round Robin Tournament, Tour-nament, Milford and Panguitch met in the final game... a rematch of last year. Panguitch stopped the Tigers 38-37 in a low scoring affair to take the championship at the Centrum on the campus of Southern South-ern Utah University. It was not exactly a pretty game. It came down to one shot by Milford that missed. The rebound came off and as the players shuffled for the ball, a jump was called with less than a second left. The Bobcats got the ball on the alternating possession rule and only had to throw it in-bounds in-bounds to finish the game. Dusty Orton and Jason Barney each scored 1 1 points, while Austin Owens hit for 8, including a big three pointer in the final quarter. The Bobcats simply out-willed Milford down the l stretch. Milford upset Escalante the first day 66-57, then knocked off the top rated team, Wayne, in the triple overtime 64058 on Friday night in the semi finals. They play a hard nosed game and are tough to beat if the game is close. Panguitch, meanwhile stopped Piute 63-45 on the first day in a game that saw the Bobcats trailing 39-41 after three and then blitzing the T-Birds in the final quarter. Jason Barney and Dusty Orton each hit for 13, but it was freshman Acey Burningham off the bench that gave the Bobcats a big left as he scored 9 and played well. Garrett Sawyer pitched in with 8. Friday night, Panguitch blew out to a 18-2 first quarter lead over Valley and never looked back, winning 45-30. PHS was hitting the outside shot as Dusty Orton nailed 15 and David Henrie 14. Jason Barney scored 9 and had 10 rebounds. One of the top stories, however, was defense. Austin Owens held Valley star Ike Spencer to only six points. The Bobcats defense was at its finest. Panguitch coach Scott Hunt and assistant Arlin Sawyer were happy with the region title, even though the final game was less than they expected offensively. Hunt has now led his team to the region tournament championship in two of his first three years as the head coach at Panguitch. Wayne placed third, Valley fourth and Escalante fifth in the '99 version of the Round Robin. |
