Show ' ' '11. By Marlene Haws 826-4859 Arnold and Deon Alvey spent Christmas in Las Vegas, Nev. with , daughters and sons-in-law, Raylene and David Whitefield and Denise and Andy Dube. Marilyn Jackson and daughter, Janae have been getting to see a little of the country lately. Each of them took a turn going to Texas with Tom Jackson on a couple of his truck runs. Tom has covered a lot of states in the past year. Daryl and Dana Alvey came from Cedar City on Christmas day to enjoy part of the festivities at the home of Dana's Mother, Rolain Alvey. They left daughter, Lisa, here to spend a week with Grandma. Deon Alvey and Marlene Haws took their mother, Fontella Mecham, to the Garfield Memorial Hospital the day before New Years. Then Geraldine Liston went over to be with her on New Years Day. She is doing better, but still has some problems. Hope all of you have the "flu bug" under control and that the New Year will start out better for all of us. When Blake and Betty Schow, Salt Lake City, were in town last, they visited Lana Christian and donated $100 to the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (Escalante Camp) to help with the reprinting of "The Escalante Story" by Nethella Wool-sey. Wool-sey. This was the balance of the money paid into the fund for the Escalante Reunion, which has been held annually at Fremont Park in Salt Lake City for years. The attendance at-tendance at that reunion has been dwindling each year so it was decided de-cided last year that it should be discontinued. dis-continued. Blake and Betty were the last chairmen for the reunion. Velma Boulter reports that 15 of the Haws cousins met during the holidays at the home of Wanda and Ethan Hansen in Layton for a scrumptious chicken dinner and gab fest. Others in attendance, besides Velma were: Ray and Sylvia Alvey, Roy; Ken and Nedra Tucker, Morgan; Mor-gan; Bessie Lighthiezer, Morgan and Mesa; J. C. and Eva Haws, Brigham City; Kenneth and Marie Griffin, Provo; Neta Poulson, Boulder and Luther and Deanne Smith also of Layton. Then Velma went to J. C.'s and Eva's for four days, Kenneth and Marie went to Ken's and Nedra's for two days and Neta went back to Sherrill and Dorothy Do-rothy Jean Alveys (in Layton) where she spent the holidays and had both eyes operated on. Dudley and Hazel Spencer went to Idaho to spend Christmas with Dudley's family. On their way. home they stopped to see the J. C. Haws' and took Velma Boulter back to Lehi where she had been staying with her daughter, Sondra Boulter. It's lucky when you can have a direct di-rect line of transportation! McKay and Rose Bailey went to Mesa, Ariz, during the holidays. They visited daughter and son-in-law Natalie and Jerry Brian and son and daughter-in-law Alan and Sara Bailey. They were able to attend granddaughter Jenna Bailey's baptismal bap-tismal and attended sacrament meeting meet-ing to see their newest grandchild, Austin Bailey, receive his name and a blessing. After they returned home they met son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Karma Bailey and family in Richfield and had lunch together. Neuman and Lucinda Duncan. Cedar City and Rick and Helen (See ESCALANTE On Page 7 -A) Escalante News From Page 2-A Pruitt, Richfield came to visit mom and dad, Florence and Melvin Alvey over the holiday. Also visiting the Alvey's were: Boyd and Claudia Alvey of Salt Lake City and Lee and Thelma Smith, Henrieville. They had received a Christmas card from Nelda Willis from up North and she seemed to be happy and content. Quinn and Doneen Griffin sold their "Dairy Quinn" to Bill and Margee Weppner of Wisconsin. The Weppners have already taken it over and will open for business in the spring. Shaun Coleman was thrilled to receive Christmas cards from so many of you while he was at Fort Sill, Okla. He said he didn't have time to thank all of you individually individu-ally but he really appreciated it. Arden and MaeVonn Taylor were getting ready to go to Phoenix for a few days when Arden had another an-other upset with his heart and had to be taken to Salt Lake City. Hope you get to feeling better, Arden, Ar-den, so you can go down and soak up some of that Arizona sunshine. I don't know if Gene and Thais Griffin know whether they are coming com-ing or going, but they have been back and forth to Mesa, Ariz, three or four times since Thanksgiving. Areola Gates was able to come home from St. George to spend New Years with Pratt and visit Jim and Margo Smith and family. Visiting at the home of Norman and Ardis Christensen were their children: Darwin and Vadas Green, Huntington; Keith and Donna Christensen, Cedar City; Gary and Judilyn Christensen, St. George, who divided their time with Ju-dilyn's Ju-dilyn's parents, Lynn and Judy Griffin; Grif-fin; Arthur and Julie Lyman, Boulder Boul-der and Clyde and Terrie Christensen Christen-sen who also visited Terrie's parents, par-ents, Freland and Phyllis Alvey. Terrie and Clyde live in Tooele. Larry Christensen had his wife, Ruth, in the hospital for a week during Christmas. They first took her to Panguitch, then on to Cedar City where she had surgery. Calvin and Martha Schow, Salt Lake City, came to spend a few days with Martha's mother, Nellie Bailey. Connie Jepsen, Boulder and Carrie Griffin have been taking turns staying with her. There is still lots of sickness. Jim and Anita Bowman had to life flight their baby to Salt Lake City to get her well and the EMTs made an ambulance call to treat Verda Liston at her home. It ended up she didn't have to go to the hospital. hospi-tal. Ardis Christensen said Gary and Jody Gledhill had their baby in the hospital all day Christmas day. Frank Venuti was able to get funds through the Escalante Natural History Association to put new roofing on the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Building. Reed Munson and Tony Peterson did the work. Camp officers Lana Christian, Chris-tian, Sheila Woolley and LaRue Spencer and all the daughters were very excited about it and most appreciative. ap-preciative. Condolences to Iona Alvey who lost two sisters and a brother-in-law all in one week. She attended the funeral of her sister, Lorna Shelby, of California, in Richfield on Friday Fri-day and that of sister and brother-in-law, Hans and Golda Jackson, Teas-dale, Teas-dale, on Saturday. The Jacksons died within one day of each other. Betty R. Alvey spent part of her holiday with her children Jay and Linda Stokes, in Riverton and Greg and Irene Tait in South Jordan. Greg was just made bishop in their ward. It was Chad Stokes who recently reported his mission, not the son of Greg and Irene. Their son, Kerry, is on a mission in Spain. Stanley and Marlene Stowe saw Garlan and Ruth Mitchell in Cedar City last week and they said to tell all their friends and relatives over here "hello." The Mitchell's have joined the snowbird ranks and are spending the winter in Arizona. They were in Cedar City for doctor appointments. |
