Show Bryce Canyon Resumes Prescribed Fire Program BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL NA-TIONAL PARK Following Memorial Day weekend, approximately approxi-mately May 26-31, Bryce Canyon National Park will resume its prescribed pre-scribed fire program. Under the program, fires are ignited to reduce hazard fuel buildup, restore the park to a more natural state, and reduce the proliferation of dense, stagnant undergrowth. Since the park was established in 1928, wildland fires have been suppressed routinely. Over the years this practice has resulted in the old growth ponderosa pine for-est for-est being replaced by more shade 6' tolerant species such as Douglas fir, and low growing shrubs. The prescribed pre-scribed fire program will reintroduce re-introduce low intensity ground fire to the park in an effort to restore it to its pre-settlement condition. The site to be burned will include in-clude the area around the park employee em-ployee housing and the maintenance facility. Park roads in and near this project may be temporarily closed due to smoke and low visibility during this time. It is the intent of the park management to impact visitors as little as possible while this project is taking place. |
