Show County Mothers1 March Slated January 18-25 Mothers,. .representing' The March of Dimes, will be marching door-to-door Jan. 18 through 25 collecting funds to fight birth defects. de-fects. Garfield County mothers under the direction of Dawn Stock have set a goal to raise $1,500 during this year's march, said Doreen Hendrickson, Hen-drickson, March of Dimes Mothers' March representative for southern Utah. Last year Garfield County raised almost $1,500. "We appreciate appreci-ate the support Garfield County always al-ways gives the Mothers' March," said Hendrickson. The first Mothers' March began almost 40 years ago. March of Dimes' volunteers in Phoenix, Ariz., devised the idea to raise funds to combat a severe polio outbreak. One hour after the first Mothers' March began more than $45,000 had been raised. With the development of the Salk and Sabin vaccines in 1956, Mothers' March had helped the March of Dimes win the fight against polio. Now the funds raised during Mothers' March are used to support March of Dimes programs. "March of Dimes funds research and educational programs that help babies get a healthy start in life," said Jean Hatch, director of The March of Dimes Southern Utah Division. "Many serious health problems can be prevented if women take good care of their babies ba-bies before they're born." "Some of the funds raised during Mothers' March will be used to fund local programs like the Outreach Out-reach Program," said Hendrickson. 6 Through Outreach, Utah Valley Regional Medical Center is able to update and train physicians and nurses in remote areas on the latest in birth defects prevention. "The support we receive through events like the Mothers' March help us continue programs like Outreach," said Hendrickson. Mothers' March is the first big event in this year's celebration of The March of Dimes' 50th anniversary. anniver-sary. "For 50 years we've been dedicated to helping families prevent pre-vent birth defects," said Hatch. "We hope to get a lot of support during our 50th year anniversary Mothers' March," said Hendrickson. The March of Dimes is still in need of volunteers to help in this year's march. People interested in participating partici-pating should contact their local March of Dimes' office. "If you can't volunteer, you can still offer your support by giving when your neighbor knocks on the door," said Hendrickson. "Who knows, you may be helping your own children or grandchildren." |
