Show Cattle Thief Sentenced To Year In County Jail A Colorado City, Ariz., man is serving a one-year jail term in the Garfield County jail following his sentencing Nov. 30 in Manti by Sixth District Court Judge Don Tibbs. Marion Steed, 35, who pleaded guilty to three felony charges of stealing livestock was sentenced to three consecutive terms of up to five years each in the Utah State Prison, fined $1,250 and ordered to pay restitution as determined by Utah Adult Probation and Parole Office. Judge Tibbs suspended the prison terms and ordered Steed to serve one year in the county jail instead. His jail sentence will be subject to review after 90 days, and when he is released from jail, according ac-cording to the terms of his sentence, sen-tence, he must obtain full time employment outside Colorado City. Steed pleaded guilty Oct. 26 to the three theft counts in exchange for prosecutors dropping two other rustling charges as part of a plea bargain. Steed was arrested after trying to sell seven cows and calves with altered al-tered brands and earmarks at a livestock live-stock auction in Richfield on Oct. 12. The alterations were spotted by brand inspector Terrill Staples who was able to make out the original markings. He checked with three Garfield County cattle ranchers who told Staples they had not sold any cattle to Steed. Staples notified the Garfield County Sheriffs department and Deputy John Niemann helped him gather sufficient additional evidence to obtain an arrest warrant. Steed was arraigned on a charge of third degree livestock felony on Oct 14. |
