Show 'Cactus 'Buck Taken In Area Makes Grand Junction Newspaper When Garfield County Travel Council Chairman Bob Benfield visited Grand Junction, Colo, to attend a Grand Circle meeting, he noticed the following article written by staff reporter Dave Buchanan for the community's local newspaper The Daily Sentinel: "'Betty Gulman has seen just about everything in 30 years of bowhunting. But when the vivacious viva-cious brunette from Fullerton, Calif., saw her first cactus buck, she couldn't help but be surprised. Tve killed quite a few deer, but I had never seen anything at all like this,' Gulman said. ' I was looking for a good four-point buck, good enough for Pope and Young (the record book for archery hunters). But I passed up a couple of opportunities for this guy. The moment I saw him, I knew I had to have him.' The buck had sprouted seriously deformed antlers, the result of an hormonal imbalance thought to be caused by losing his testicles in a fight or on a fence. Gulman was hunting on a private pri-vate ranch near Panguitch, Utah, during a special limited-license hunt when she got her shot at the extraordinary ex-traordinary buck. Only six non-resident licenses are drawn each year for the area, and this was Gulman's first attempt at getting a permit 'Some of my friends have tried for years to get into the drawing, and I did it on the first try,' Gulman said, laughing. 'Imagine what they'll say when I show them this mount.' Gulman said the Panguitch area has a reputation for producing record-sized bucks. She turned down several chances earlier at "nice" bucks, but then she found time was running out "This was the third-to-last day of the season, but I had wanted to make sure I got a nice trophy,' said Gulman, a member of several bowhunters clubs, including an honorary membership in the Grand Mesa Bowmen. T was hunting (near) a waterhole when this buck appeared.' A skillful archer, Gulman downed the buck with a 25 -yard shot to the heart from her recurve bow. The mount is being prepared by Rick Weaver of Rick's Taxidermy Taxider-my in Clifton. This is only the second cactus buck I've seen,' said Weaver, who has mounted several hundred deer heads in his profession. Tve done a lot of nontypical mounts, but this is by far the weirdest I've ever seen.'" |
