Show ' jdST STUFF L BY fM J Happy New Year! Somewhere, amidst the rustling of gift wrapping, wrap-ping, the singing of carols, the shoveling of snow, the thawing of pipes, and the onslaught of snow, the new year sneaked in, and 1988 became a thing of the past It seems like only a few months ago that we were raising our glasses and toasting the new year of 1988 and all that it would bring. And, while 1988 had its share of mishaps and disasters, overall it was a pretty good year. Now, 1989 stretches before us; a blank page of history waiting to be written. And what we make of the new year, what we write on that page, is entirely up to us. Let's face it, none of us single handedly is going to achieve world peace, put a stop to world hunger, or pay back the national debt. It is unlikely that one of us will find the cure for AIDS, the answer to the problem with the terrorists or put an end to world suffering. But what we do with our year is up to us. There are many successes just waiting to be achieved, many glories waiting to be experienced, much fun waiting to be had. There are also many sorrows and disappointments disap-pointments looming in the year ahead. But how we choose to deal with them is up to us. It's no one else's decision. This is our year. It can be as grand and wonderful or as disappointing and depressing as we wish to make it. I've decided to embrace '89 with a sense of optimism and hope and I'm going to make it the best year ever! As my dad, the Rat, wrote in his last column, "There are so many joys to hold and behold in this wonderful, rotten world." In 1989 let's reach for the joys! Happy New Year and God bless. A.
