Show PH Girls Track Team Wins Region 12 Title By John W Yardley The Panguitch High School girls team successfully defended their Region 12 track title last Saturday in Cedar City, led again by senior Misty Miller who won three individual in-dividual firsts and ran on a winning, relay. The Lady Cats easily out distanced the second place teams by a score of 96 to 67. It marked the second consecutive year the PHS girls cut a wide swath past the competition at Region. Even with the heavy loss of Kena Mclnelly, the Lady Cats picked up on last year with new stars like Suzie Holman winning the 400, placing second in a photo in the 200, finishing second in the long jump and running also on a winning relay team. Nanette Covington finished second to Miller in the 1600 and 3200 and ran on both winning relays, the 1600 and medley. Colette Simkins was sixth in the javelin and ran on both winning relays. Rhonda LeFevre placed sixth in both the long jump and high jump and ran on the winning medley relay. Mamie Miller qualified for state in the 3200. Stephanie Marshall ran a solid leg to help boost the gals to the medley win. All in all it was a great team effort for the PHS girls and coach Heidi Henrie. Other county girls who placed in the region and qualify now for state this weekend are Cari Baugh, Bryc Valley, first in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the javelin in an outstanding effort; Kim Woolsey, Escalante, third in the shot put, third in the loo and fifth in the 200 for a great in-dividual in-dividual performance; Candace Haws, Escalante, fourth in the high jump, and Sheila Syrett, Bryce Valley, third in the 3200. In the boys competition at region, Panguitch was eighth, Bryce Valley ninth and Escalante tenth. Jared LeFevre of Panguitch was the only first place finisher winning the 800 meter and then placing third in both the long jump and high jump, showing all around athletic ability. John Carr, Escalante, was third in the pole vault; Tracy Feltner of Bryce Valley placed fourth in the pole vault and sixth in the long jump; Trevor Stewart of BV was fifth in the pole vault and fifth in the 800 meters; Nathan Henrie of Panguitch placed fourth in the shot put; Mike Goulding of BV was fifth in both the 100 meter and 200 meter; Chris Baugh, BV was fourth in the 300 hurdles and Eric Stout of BV was fifth in the 400 meters. These boys will now all qualify for the state finals. Track and field requires dedication and hard work. Nice going to all county athletes. On a final note of local interest Robbie Gleave of Piute won the long jump, the pole vault and was second in the 100 meters as the Piute All-State All-State basketball player demon- strated his athletic prowess and Alan Orton of Kanab won the high jump by five inches at 6'6" as well as placing fourth in the 200 meters. |
