The logging truck, driven by Glover Smith, 55, Escalante, braked and tried to swerve, striking the pickup at the passenger door. The big rig jackknifed, scattering its load of logs over the highway. The 1973 Ford pickup was propelled off the road at impact, going through a fence and coming to rest in a thicket of scrub oak. Smith was uninjured in the accident ac-cident which took place under clear skies and dry road conditions. Among the first to arrive on the scene were Bill Vidrine and his sawmill crew who were just leaving work. Garfield County Sheriff's Posse members and Escalante Sawmills employees assisted with cleanup and traffic control. The injured were transported by the Escalante ambulance with Emergency Medical Technicians Tracy Dallison, Brad Shallit, Barbara Reynolds, Lynn Mitchell and Wayne Barker on duty. Investigating the accident was Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Gaylen Moore with the assistance of Sgt. Pat Meanea, a member of UH-P's UH-P's Utah Truck Inspection Program. . .... . ' .
