Show Bobcats Win Second Place In MesqiTurite Invitational By John Yard ley Pangukch High School boys basketball team stormed to the finals in the Cactus Country tournament in Mcsquite, Ncv., last weekend, before falling 64-62 to Hurricane in overtime. The Bobcats defeated Alamo 36-35 36-35 on Thursday, slipped past Nevada's number one ranked AA team Moapa 54-49 Friday, and then finally lost the final 64-62. Against Alamo, the Bobcats played hardnoscd defense, and did not take many shots as David Tebbs stepped to the free throw line with four seconds on the clock and the score tied 35-35. Tebbs made the first one and missed the second one to give Panguitch the one point victory, 36-35. Gary Leach hit some big shots to lead the scoring with 12 points. Playing Moapa Valley, the Bobcats played heady, controlled basketball to lead 43-39 after three periods. PHS held off a rally at the end by the Pirates to capture the win 54-49. With a great deal of balance and team play, Dave Tebbs hit for 12, Chris Henrie 11, Gary Leach and Jason Miller 9 each, Travis Hatch 7 and Chris Mathews 6 for the win. Moapa Valley was the favorite to win the tournament and won their other two games rather handily. Hurricane came into the game with Panguitch sporting a 4-0 record and nobody had played them closer than 20 points. The Bobcats led by ten 33-23 at half time, behind 19 big first-half points by Travis Hatch. The Tigers chipped away at the Bobcat lead to tie the score in the final period. I 4'-: i v, r - Chris Henrie But, Hurricane drilled two three-pointers three-pointers and the Bobcats were called for two traveling violations and the score was tied 60-60 at the end of regulation. In overtime, Hurricane hit their free throws and PHS had the misfortune of missing three times from the charity stripe, after shooting near perfect during the game. The Bobcats had a try from the half line as the buzzer sounded to finish in second place in the toumcy. Hatch finished the game with 23, followed by Gary Leach's .15, and 'Jason Millers 1 J ;;ar the injide players for Panguifcn" all played very, very well. Chris Henrie was named MVP in the tournament for his fine point guard play and tough defense. Travis Hatch was also named to the all-tournament team. Coach Ted Chidcstcr was pleased with his team and the way they played during the three-day tournament as they tuned up for league play. Panguitch entertains the Escalante Moquis tomorrow night (Friday) in their first league game of the season. |
