| Show endorsement af GOODING local business men and shippers meet friday give measure support A meeting of 0 the representative business men and shippers of brigham city and box elder county was held at the commercial club rooms in this city friday evening for the purpose of discussing the gooding long and chort haul bill the meeting was called to order at 7 by joseph 7 hansen of this city vice president of intermediate rate association and the visiting speakers were edward H eardley of 0 the eardley electric co IV S mccarthy traffic manager of 0 the salt lake hardware co and J S eardley secretary ot of the utah mag mfg co miss rietta krefter ably rendered two vocal solos accompanied by mrs edith dark clark eardley and mccarthy of salt lake each gave a talk on the proposed gooding bill now before congress explaining the various phases of this measure mr air eardley in a short talk said 1 I am in sympathy with all men who are trying to do things in this workaday work a day world the men who are willing to try and build up themselves and the community interests without tearing anybody down he paid a tribute to the farmer in his achievements and explained how freight rates effect every community he favored the gooding dill bill as it would give the intermountain business men a fair chance in competing with those of other sections in conclusion he read a splendid poem entitled the man alan who tills mr air mccarthy said the matter we have up tor for discussion tonight Is a thing that affects us all in our dally daily life we have no quarrel with the railroads he said but we do ask them to give us a square deal speak ing further he said unless you have an equitable freight rate you cannot meet the competition of those who liace have an advantage in this line over you 1 he explained the purpose of the gooding bill and told just what effect it would have in bringing about this desired equity to business men inthis in this section as compared with those on the pacific coast A round table discussion followed and the visitors answered many questions by local shippers following the talks and discussion N C simonsen moved that it be the sense of those present that appreciation be expressed to the intermountain rate association tor for their efforts in behalf of the intermountain states la in reference to just and reasonable freight charges and that we agree to assess ourselves and pay the amount required of us to help defray expenses of the association in their efforts to defend the gooding bill T thi his motion was seconded and was unanimously adopted B H jones moved that it be the sense of the meeting that we express in a personal letter to all our representatives senta tives at washington D 0 our appreciation tor for their efforts in behalf of the passage of the gooding bill this motion was also seconded and unanimously adopted seconded and unanimously adopted |
