| Show TW A att ff THE UTAH PUBLIC m a ato SHOOTING TRACTS V vast ast inland lakes are planted to moss for myriads of wild birds during the week john B matalas Mat hlas president ot of the dox box elder fish and game protective association deputy game warden J S hull and son archie and the writer spent halt half a day at the utah public shooting grounds out near the little mountain this tract which Is now being developed on a large scale consists of 0 about eleven thousand acres of the inest finest wild bird nesting and hunting grounds to be found anywhere in a the entire country according to men ot of authority iut hority along aloag this line last year about was spent in building dykes which connect up the knowles thus forming a vast inland lake consisting of more than twelve square miles water is secured from state rights further north and is conveyed into the hunting grounds by means of a canal the dykes seven or eight in all are each provided with a spillway and when the water reaches a certain depth it flows over the spillways spill ways into the lands below these spillways spill ways also provide a means of emptying the lake at any time desired this immense inland lake is called the hull lake in honor of our worthy game warden J S hull who first worked out a plan to develop this section as a great public hunting ground the general plan calls for the creation of many other lakes until this once arid alkali section will be converted into a vast hunting ground with nume numerous tous lakes and ample teed feed to nest and care tor for millions of wild birds boating on the lake is also a delightful sport especially where a motor boat is used at the present time warden hull and a number of 0 men are busily engaged in planting potato moss and other plants along the water edge of the lake and around the islands ln in order to provide feed for the birds this moss will spread and grow very rapidly and in a couple of 0 years will furnish ample feed for myriads of birds it Is possible that through the pending migratory bird law upwards of will be raised this year for the development of this great public shooting grounds few of our people fully realize what the development of this tract will mean to brigham city and to the state of utah the grounds are reached by fo following lowing the main highway west of corinne to a point two miles west of the little mountain and then taking the road leading to the left or off in a southwesterly direction people who have not already visited the new hunting ground would find it interesting to drive put and look it over warden hull would no doubt be delighted to take parties over the grounds at any time according to appointment |
