Show im$mjm mm By Harriet Priska Thanksgiving Day brought only a light sprinkling of snow on the higher elevations making roads passable to all the travelers coming into the area for family get togeth-ers. togeth-ers. Jim and Lois Daggett enjoyed a visit from their daughter Sue and her husband Kelly Ralston, Palm-dale, Palm-dale, Calif. Jim and Lois are settling set-tling into their new home reporting better health than they have had for years! Jim is the new pastor of the Baptist church. Funeral services were held for Ronald Schow, 78, on Friday at the Escalante LDS Ward Hall. All the families came, eight children, 29 grandchildren and 21 ereat-erand- children. Ronald lived here all his life and was one of 15 children. His daughter, Lois Spencer was thankful that the entire family, including in-cluding his sister Twyla Leming, could gather together to support one another. "Sub for Santa" has a big job in Escalante this year with the closing of the sawmill. Kay and George Miller began the outreach here last year through the generosity of the community and the elementary school students. Two families received re-ceived food, gifts, and a live tree. George Miller has agreed to coordinate coordi-nate a citywide drive this year which will be non-denominational. So far he has learned of 16 families who need help. George chaired a meeting of various members of the community on Sunday evening, Dec. 1, to organize the effort. A big boost will come from Wal-Mart as part of a nation wide outreach. A percentage of the proceeds of an early morning sale on Nov. 29 will be channeled back through the store in Cedar City and donated to this fund here in Escalante. Kay Miller will be receiving canned goods and toys, wrapping paper, scotch tape and bows in her 6th grade classroom class-room at the elementary school on Dec. 9-12. Children's clothing is also needed, particularly for little boys. To cut down on expenses, Brent Griffin has agreed to go to Salt Lake City in mid-December and buy food for the program in whole- sale case lots. Because there is such a great need this year, chairman chair-man George Miller has named his campaign "Giving Until It Feels Good." He hopes to have a gift wrap session at the chapel and will be storing everything at his home. If you would care to assist in any way you may contact George and Kay Miller at (801) 826-4395 and donations can be sent to Kay at P.O. Box 248, Escalante, Utah 84726. Please make checks payable to Escalante Elementary School Student Council. Thanks to George for taking on the leadership leader-ship of this "compassionate service" ser-vice" to the community and thanks to the many who have already responded re-sponded so generously. |
