Show Miss Garfield Pageant to Open Fair Saturday Teresa Brelnholt Crystal Mangum Melanle Griffin -Wfl Kaye Lynn Brook Jean Cooper Anna Yazzie Peggy Rose V April Wayman The 1985 Garfield County Fair get i underway Saturday evening, August 3 with the annual Miss Garfield County Scholarship Pageant at the Pangultch High School gym atM p.m. Tickets will be $2 per person. Eleven of the county's prettiest and most talented young women are contestants in the program which operates under the Miss America Pageant official rules and regulations. Coordinators Hazel Houston and Janice B. Hatch say that the official rules note that-the "marks of a Miss America are good manners, good tastes, good sportsmanship, congeniality, integrity, intelligence, talent and beauty." Emceeing this year's final hours of competition will be local multi-talented, popular sports announcer Heidi King Linda Carr Sunia Spencer and columnist John Yardley. At the climax of the evening, two queens will be named, Miss Garfield County and Miss Garfield County Dairy Princess along with a first attendant to complete the royalty of three. Miss Garfield County will compete in the Miss Utah and Miss Utah State Fair contests and Miss Garfield County Dairy Princess will compete in the Utah State Dairy Princess contest. Miss Garfield County 1983, Lisa Barney, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Vermon Barney, will crown the new Miss Garfield County and Lana Houston Hiskey, Miss Garfield County Dairy Princess for 1983 who went on to become Utah Dairy Princess, will relinquish her Miss Garfield Dairy Princess title to the new princess. No Garfield County contest was held in 1984. Many gifts and prizes await the participants in this year's event and the winners can look forward to some very special awards. Each of the 11 contestants will receive a sterling silver charm bracelet and an engraved sterling silver tray will be awarded to the four non-finalists winners in the areas of talent, swimsuit, evening gown and interview. The winner of the talent award will also receive a half-tuition scholarship to Southern Utah State College. A full tuition scholarship to SUSC will be awarded to Miss Garfield County and a half tuition scholarship to the first attendant. Miss Garfield County, Miss Garfield County Dairy Princess, and the first attendant will all receive sterling silver trays as well as cash scholarships. Popular local vocalist Jody Allred has planned special numbers to please the audience and the evening's entertainment will begin with a production number by Allred and the 11 contestants. Accompanying will be Marilyn Erickson. The evening's program will include the talent and evening gown portions of the competition. The official contest will have started earlier in the day for the excited contestants, with swimsuit competition at Rubys Inn, closed to the public. Certified judges for all parts of the contest will be Max Rose and Geneal Jacobsen, St. George; Peggy Mason and Sandy Johnson, Salina; and Stan Holt, Enterprise. The swimsuit competition will be followed by a personal interview for each girl with the panel of judges where they will be asked a variety of questions, some based upon their applications. Entries in this year's contest are Teresa Brienholt, 24, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Brienholt, Panguitch who has graduated from modeling school and has a bachelors degree In finance. She will present a vocal solo and is sponsored by Zions Bank. KayeLynn Brook, 26, is a teacher at Bryce Valley High School in Tropic who "became so excited with the planning of the pageant," she "decided to become a contestant." She will demonstrate sewing for her talent portion. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. William Brook and she is sponsored by the Bryce Pines Motel. Linda Carr, 18, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Milton Carr, Esclante has studied piano for 13 of her 18 years. The runnerup winner In Sterling Scholar competition will play a piano solo. She is sponsored by the Frosty Shop. Nineteen-year-old Jean Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James N. Cooper, Panguitch will sing and dance in the competition Saturday (See PAGEANT Page 7) Pageant maammm evening. She is sponsored by SUE Market. Melanie Griffin, 17, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Griffin, Escalante. The ever busy teenager who has studied saxophone for rive years, clarinet for two years, and piano for nine years will , play a saxophone solo in the com-, petition. She is sponsored by Griffin Mercantile. Heidi King, 18, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene King, Antimony, Youngest of 10 children! she enjoys many outdoor sports and will perform a vocal solo. She is sponsored by the town of Antimony. The youngest of the group, 17-. year-old Crystal Mangum, will be a senior at Bryce Valley High School this fall. Her parents are Mr, and Mrs. Paul Mangum, Tropic. The talented piano and saxophone player who also loves barrel racing will play a piano solo. She is sponsored by Bryce-Zion Trail Rides. Also performing a piano solo will be Peggy Rose, 19, whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. Irving Rose, Henrleville. She is working toward a degree in business educaiton and would like to teach at the high school level. She is sponsored by the town of Henrieville. Sunia Spencer, 17, from Korea was adopted when she aws five years old by Mr. and Mrs. Karl Spencer, Escalante. The widely traveled 1985 graduate of Escalante High School would like to be an attorney. She will show her art work in competition. She is sponsored by Spencer Cattle Company. April Wayman 17, who says she "loves to laugh" will work toward a degree in sociology and psychology. She will dance for Saturday night's competition. She lives with her grandmother, Garda Davies, in Cannonville and is sponsored by Bryce Valley Builders. Anna Yazzie, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Yazzie is a Navajo Indian from Tuba City, Ariz, who now calls Panguitch home since she has lived there most of.hr life with her parents. She will show her art work for the contest, She is sponsored by The Round-Up, The evening's entertianment will cost ?. per person which will be used to help toward gifts and prizes for the contestants and to help pay costs ,, the pageant which organizers have tried to hold to a minimum so that more funds will directly benefit participants. Following their personal interviews with the judges, the girls, their mothers, county commissioners, judges and committee members will enjoy a special luncheon at Rubys Inn. After lunch there will be a break until 8 p.m. when the balance of the contest will take place during the evening show. Serving as auditors for the contest will be Jon Torgerson and his wife, Mavis.
