Show 'News9 Captures Press Awards The Garfield County News captured two significant awards in the "Better Newspaper Contest" held during the annual Utah Press Association convention held last week in St. George. Competing at the three-day convention in the Group II newspaper category, the News took third place in photojournalism with Its "cliff-hangar" picture of an oil rig which had overturned on a steep curve near Calf Creek, leaving its badly rupture trailer protruding precariously over the edge of the steep cliff. The photo was selected on the basis of subject matter, composition, originality, technical skill and reproduction. The second award also a third place, was taken by the News for its full page advertisement on the back cover of the 1983 annual summer tourist supplement "Garfield County Has It All." The ad, sponsored by Garfield County, featured a map of the county with an old cowboy shouting welcome to Garfield County visitors. Judges selected the ad on the basis of layout, artwork, healine, body copy and overall advertising ef fectiveness. Associate editor Nancy Bales, who accepted the awards, said, "It's great to be a part of a team here and in Richfield where everyone strives to do his best, and it's especially gratifying to be honored by your journalism peers for the work you do." The awards were presented on the final night of the three-day convention at the Four Seasons Convention Center after three days of workshops, seminars and lectures for professionals In journalism and newspaper publishing. |
