Show Conservation Officer Norm McKee shows five foot wing span of dead Golden Eagle 4 Golden Eagle Victim Of UP&L Power Line What first appeared to be an illegal act proved to le an unfortunate accident when a large golden eagle was found dead by Conservation Officer Norman ' McKee approximately three miles 1 . west of Panjitch. The bird at first appeared to have been shot and three of its talons removed, but closer examination revealed that feathers had been tof f . singed as death was caused by If. electrocution a not uncommon -. cause of death for the protected species. Electrocution has been recognized as a serious problem in eagle deaths , retrieved three miles above Panguitch Creek. Bird was a victim of electrocution. and power companies have moved to cooperate with conservation agencies to protect, the beautiful birds of prey. Devices have been patented by Utah Power and Light, for example, to make electrical poles safe for eagles. UP&L installs an "oie" (French for goose) a triangular piece of metal which prevents the eagle from landing on the dangerous part of the pole. Gradually, throughout Utah, the company is modifying its poles ro that th:y no longer present a danger to the raptors which are increasing in numbers throughout the state. .' |
