Show Editoral ,i jpV Garfield Scholars W - Are All 'Winners' ;A Eleven Garfield County seniors participated in the W Sterling Scholar competition last Thursday at Southern r Utah State College and 11 came away winners. Now, , j maybe it wasn't reported exactly that way on our X. - newspaper's front page, but it's the truth. r How could any young person participate in such a challenging and worthwhile endeavor and not come away a winner? First the student has to qualify at his own school not , . an easy task in itself, and then he has to prepare a port- 1 folio of all his accomplishments during his school 1 career. That alone, should give a real boost to his self- esteem. He has been training all of his school life for this event , , and though there are no cheerleaders, no pep rallies, no drill teams to boost his spirit, his discipline has been every bit as difficult as that of the very best athlete competing in the most demanding of sporting events. His training has consisted largely of self-discipline, working hard, doing his homework, maintaining a stan-' dard of scholastic excellence and accepting responsibili ty, better known as leadership. He has developed a zest for learning and zest for living that have sustained him and made him outstanding among his peers. That Garfield County had more Sterling Scholars this year than last simply meant that more young people had an opportunity to participate in a unique experience which no one comes away the loser. Again we salute you, Sterling Scholars. May your numbers double next year. |
