Show Local Archers To Join In Season Hunt Local archers will join an anticipated 20,000 hunters who will be afield beginning Saturday for the opening of the annual deer and elk archery season which continues through September 6. With the county generally open this year to hunting, Conservation Officer Norm McKee expects more hunters in the area. The Paunsagunt unit is closed to all deer hunting for the third year in a row, McKee says. Hunting should be good because of the wet conditions and with deer numbers increasing, McKee expects a fairly successful hunt. He reminds hunters of three important laws for archers: (1) No firearms in possession or in the vehicle; (2) Arrows must be quivered in vehicle and while traveling, and, (3) It is unlawful to hunt from any vehicle. The $10 deer archery permit is available through the end of the season from all license agents in the state and Wildlife Resources offices. The deadline for purchasing elk archery permits was August 6. Hunters are reminded they may not purchase a deer archery permit if they drew a deer control permit on August 13. Lists of successful applicants for deer control perm its will be posted after August 18 at all Wildlife Resources offi A deer arch permit allows a hunt to take two bucks two during the archery season, or one during the archery season and one during the general rifle season or muzzle-loader season. Last year, 19,646 archers harvested 3,095 deer for a hunter success of 16 percent. A total of 88 elk were harvested by 1,119 elk archery hunters for a hunter success of 8 percent. |
