Show ROAD AID TO TA U BE SOUGHT state body will urge development of highway via snowville Snow ville to the northwest line the state road commission is taking steps to ask the secretary ot of agriculture to place the highway northwest from tremonton Tre monton through le to the idaho idabo line at a point poat near strevell on the federal highway system kiil this action follows a meeting at boise ot of state ington oregon idaho and Mont montana atil called by preston G peterson chairman of the utah commission the proposed road offers close highway connections between salt lake ogden and the vast territory ot of which burley twin falls and boise are centers mr peterson is regional chairman for eleven of the western or public land states ot of a federal board on an interstate highway system tile the plan ot of this board is to evolve a system of interconnecting roads leading across the nation in alii alli desired directions to be uniformly marked as U S roads from one end to the other while in boise mr ir peterson Po terson was in close touch with the idaho road department with reference to connections between idaho and utah both on the uniform designation system and the fede federal ral hi highway or seven per cent system idaho he was informed has no objection to federal Je deral designation ot of the route by way of Snow snowville vIlle and strevell to burley twin falls boise and portland it was not ready as yet to place the idaho portion ot of this route on the idaho seven per cent or federal aid system the mere designation of the road by marking it as a U S route while it might serve to call attention to its importance should federal aid aid laws be altered 1 1 in the future does not of itself entitle a read to participate in federal aid under the present laws in utah it is believed and possibly in idaho as well federal aid Is almost a prerequisite to havi having ng this route constructed ted in a standard worthy of and required by a considerable volume of 0 through traffic utah therefore Is going a st step ep farther than idaho in submitting this stretch of road to the secretary of agriculture for approval as a definite part of the seven per cent system it is imar improbable however that the secretary of agriculture will finally approve ot of tile the utah request until all some understanding has been reached as to policy the united states bureau of public roads insisted on taking steps to complete a at an early date the connection with nevada on the utah nevada line on account of tile the importance of such route to through traffic possibly it if the bureau can be convinced that the snow ville route also is important from an interstate point ot of view steps may be taken to urge on idaho the importance ot of connecting the route in idaho with the present federal highway system the utah end of the highway is already a federal aid road as far ar as tremonton Tre monton and at present leaves the idaho connection with utah west ot of dear bear river undecided the utah end ot of the route is 13 estimated as sixty one miles long over this route the distance between granger cranger wyo and say twin falls idaho is almost exactly the same over the present roads as that by way of pocatello from the transcontinental point of 0 view the construction of the snowville Snow ville route would furnish alternative a routes between granger and burley tor for the traveler westbound bound or eastbound between boise or the pacific northwest and the east aside from such considerations however it has vast economic importance as connecting the salt lake valley points by the most direct routes with the rich agricultural areas of the twin falls region tribune |
