Show 1 I 1 FR U GUN PLA y alleged to have shot A J patrick in back and stamped him in face A J patrick age 32 2 of 0 helper Is in a critical conditi condition 0 n at the garland hospital suffering from gunshot wounds in the back and from being I 1 stamped in the face and J B newman age 30 of ogden is in the weber county jail tor for the attack which he is alleged to have admitted according to sheriff john 11 zundel who in connection with deputy chas cheat cheal and county attorney J wesley horsley investigated the case newman was negotiating for the purchase of patricks overland sedan and the parties came to ogden tuesday to I 1 secure money to close tile the deal failing to get the money there tiley they started for bothwell newman stating that lie could procure money from a brother residing there instead of 0 f following ol 01 the main highway west of tremonton Tre monton newman who was at the wheel Is said to have taken a road leading north about a mile west of oe tremonton Tre monton patrick became suspicious and asked newman to let him drive but the latter assur red him he was near its his brothers place so patrick decided to put on a clean shirt in order to ma makei ke a good appearance to newmans brother As patrick was changing his shi shirt rt he was shot in fit the back ho he says he called out to fo newman you have shot me newman replied I 1 did not do it but immediately tired fired again both bullets piercing patricks lungs patrick says he fell out of the car but immediately jumped jumpe dup up and started to run down the road newman he says followed him a short distance tiring firing a number of 0 times but soon gave up and went back to the auto he turned the machine around and stared after patrick who then started across the fields nowman e in ap hesayo he lie says left the car when opposite te him I 1 and chased him still continuing to shoot occasionally patrick soon weakened and as he tell fell newman caught up to him and stamped on oil his face breaking his nose and crushing out one eye mr garley a rancher who heard the shots and saw newman chasi chasing patrick and heard him cry out started f tor or the scene on horseback when newman saw him coming lie he ran back to the car and drove down the road patrick was removed to the garland hospital where his wounds were dressed and lie he is reported to be getting along favorably newman was arrested at his home in ogden adams avenue shortly after 11 p m by sergeant C E noble detectives detective george wardlaw claire J C hutchens and W S Champney si he was in the automobile said to belong to patrick when taken to the police station newman is said to have admitted the shooting handed the officers a revolver and said the trouble arose over his efforts to purchase the automobile from patrick |
