seventh annual convention ot of the american legion department ot of utah annual legion auxiliary and the third annual promenade of 0 the forty and eight opened in this city thursday morning tor for a three day session delegates and members of these organizations from all parts of the state with hundreds of visitors from far and near are here to participate in the convention and to en joy the enter entertains taing programs arranged by the local post of the legion among the distinguished visitors at the convention are national commander james A drain and wife ot of the legion national vice president mrs earle B stewart of the aubil tary richard IV young jr representing governor dern representatives don B D colton and E 0 leatherwood a number of state officials commander john booth of the utah de pertinent part ment mrs airs C J M trotman de apartment part ment president of the auxiliary 0 A department departs adjutant 7 mrs chas V ac K saxton department secretary the the program yest yesterday erda mor morning in consisted of a band concert at the court house at 9 followed byj by a meeting of the department executive committee of the legion at the commercial club rooms and a meeting ot of the department executive committee of the auxiliary at the presbyterian 0 chapel o the first regular session of these organizations were held at 11 the legion meeting at the commercial club and the auxiliary at the presbyterian chapel reports of the various officers were made and committees appointed another band concert was given the first big feature of f the atter after hernoon ferillo program was the monster pal pa l parade in two see sections dons which chic 1 marched from the th e central school grounds at 20 0 the parade was serenal blocks long the line ot of march being north on main to first north then countermarch back to forest street west on forest to first west and iback back to main then south to the school grounds first in order were the color bearers 1 followed allowed oll owed by the logan fife and drum I 1 corps band national commander jas A drain and party auxiliary vice president mrs earle 13 stewart and party city and county officials officers and members of the various posts of 0 the legion and Auxilia auxiliary and the forty and eight next in line was gus L decker the sharp shooter mounted followed by the volture Venture 40 1 weber and box elder and the dear bear river band then came tile the business and professional girls the members 0 of the kiwanis club and the rotary club represented by our boys next in line li ne came the display of the play grounds including the boys on ponies the rainbow girls a beautiful float boys and girls representing george georga and mary washington the rell red cross the play grounds band in a float the girls with decorated baby carriages and boys with decorated bicycles tri cleles and scooters shooters oters the second section was headed by the brigham seoul scout band and was composed of many beautiful floats there were the peach day boosters boasters bo junior girls of the second ward mounted on oil a large van and dr crested steed ested as girl scouts next was a beautiful float ot of the auxiliary no 10 and the float ot of the brigham auxiliary which was also very pretty then came the beautiful float of 0 the justamere just a mere club representing our allies followed by the attractive commercial club float announcing noun cing peach day next was an attractive float of the daughters of pioneers with its seagull monument then came the floats of the business houses including olsen bicycle sporting goods decker becker brewing co of ogden brigham bottling works I lansen furniture music co the hub bub paris grill banner ice cream co texaco products and others A public patriotic mass meeting was held at the tabernacle at and was waa also a joint session of 0 the legion and auxiliary the meeting was presided over by department commander john boothe and was largely attended the program opened by a i quartet we are glad to see you by the logan legionnaires followed iby by the advance of 0 colors by the ser vigeant geant at arros invocation was offered by department chaplain lamont lament i glover the address of welcome was delivered by mayor james knudson who welcomed the legionnaires and I 1 visitors and turned over the keys ot of the city to them vice commander C V forsgren of the brigham pose no 10 also welcomed the members ot of the legion in a short and fitting address the response for the legion was delivered by judge J A howell of ogden who told the purpose of the T legion and the endowment fund in an eloquent manner lie he said that america fought in the world war to save her ideals and institutions that the men worked in unison to achieve the victory and that they were no longer soldiers of the flag but crusaders of american ideals that the flag stands tor for life liberty and the pursuit of happiness he complimented brigham city tor for its hospitality w which aich he said was widely known the response for the auxiliary was given by mrs william T elliott ot of helper vice tice president of the au auxiliary ail who expressed her appreciation of the hearty welcome extended by the I 1 local people the response tor for the forty and eight was by T J maginnis who very briefly told of the close relationship of this organization t ion with the legion jack t of the cedar city post favored the meeting with vocal solos commander boothe introduced congressmen don B colton congressman E 0 leatherwood former governor charles mabey who aclin acknowledged owl with a salute he then introduced richard W young jr who spoke in behalf of governor geo H dern who was unable to attend the convention ile he expressed his pleasure in being privileged in attending the conNen convention tion and extended greetings from the governor to national commander james A drain and to all the legionnaires mrs earle B stewart national vice president of the western division of the american legion auxiliary whose home is at roseburg oregon spoke briefly she complimented utah for its gain in membership in the american legion larry doyle representing the forty and eight of glendale mont delivered a humorous speech he said he came front from a country where men were men and women were ado reable commander drain then addressed the audience stating that this was his third visit to utah he felt proud to note that utah had not only raised her duoto of the endowment fund but had exceeded the allotment and by the end of the year there would be over subscribed to the fund ile he said we are going to make out of the calamity of the world war var a means of progress following the law lav of compensation pensa tion the balance was always struck our obligations he said are ara beyond all other nations and this will give america a chance tor for freedom not only born but to prevail which would eventually bring about the thousand years of peace commander drain said the legion came the closest to the war and therefore they have a friendship tor for each other they speak a common language and their principles are service to god and to country therefore we will go on with no ao power to check us to bring about peace to all nations the men are in the legion lie he said not tor for what they can get out of it but for what they can give he paid a glowing tribute to departed comrades and to their devotion he said the legion was out lor for unselfish service and to see that those lives bete not lost in vain the ogden legion quartet rendered two vocal selections the last one being a humorous number composed tor for the occasion under the direction ot of commander booth a short memorial service was held to the memory ot of the the departed comrades the memorial taps being rendered by mra birk connie M peters benediction was pronounced by chat chaplain lamont lament glover after which taps were sounded the sporting program at the ball park commencing at was large ly attended gus gus L Becker gave a fancy shooting shooting exhibition which was very clever mr decker becker Is nationally known as an expert rifle shot he was assisted by john ii IN drowning browning famous firearms inventor of ogden the baseball game between the brigham and ogden teams resulted in i score of 6 to 3 in favor of the gunners the officers of the legion and auxiliary and other distinguished visitors were guests of the kiwanis club at a luncheon held at the banquet hall in the bank building at 6 the evenings program concluded with a grand ball at the academy followed the fireworks and boxing contest an account of the boxing bout will be found in another column the program this morning consisted of regular regu lir sessions ot of the legion and auxiliary at which reports were made and business concerning these organizations izat ions transacted the musical programs this morning by tile the various bands were appreciated by our local people and the visitors adding life and enthusiasm to the occasion at 1215 the national and state officers of tile the legion and auxiliary were guests at the rotary luncheon at which time a splendid pro grammas grain gram was carried out following the luncheon an auto trip was taken out into the dear bear river valley the party returning in aime ime for the horse racing which commenced at 4 at the ball bal park i the program is 13 replete with interesting afternoon and tomorrow and it Is anticipated that tho the large attendance of yest yesterday erda y will lie be greater on the closing day of the convention ven tion |
