The program was presented in two separate meetings in Escalante and Tropic in order to allow all parents to attend. Stake president LoRell Munson acknowledged ward leaders and welcomed parents, noting they were gathered to partake of training vitally needed. Stake Secretary Ron Adamson presented statistics on venereal disease in Utah, noting gonorrhea is 50 times more common than measles in today's society and that an average of two to three seniors in every Utah classroom have or have had vencral disease. He pointed out there are problems with shoplifting, joy-riding, drugs, truancy, etc., in the Escalante Stake area and the answer to solving these problems lies with strengthening the home and building the self-image of the young person. Advice on ways of having a positive effect on young people as opposed to a negative effect was given, stressing that "sympathy only hears, while, empathy understands." A film entitled "Strenghtenlng the Home" with narrative thoughts interjected by Harold B. Lee was shown and a leaflet of guidelines for parents was distributed. The leaflets quoted Boyd K. Packer, "Your work in this great vineyard is the cultivation of the tender shoots. Guard them, . guide them well, nourish ( them. Dig about them and ' prune them as required, and they ,will not bring forth wild fruit." |
